Responding to a question about Councilman Peter Vallone’s efforts to limit homework, Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday that such matters were best left to the Department of Education.

“I suspect if you’re running for eighth grade class president, less homework is a good campaign platform to work with,” Mr. Bloomberg said. “I don’t mean to make light of his concerns, but it’s up to the Department of Education and they’ll decide what is an appropriate amount of homework.”

Mr. Vallone’s proposed resolution would call on the DOE to limit homework to two and a half hours a night and to declare one day a week homework-free.
