An infant was found dead outside an apartment complex in the Bronx with her umbilical cord still attached, police officials said yesterday.
Groundskeepers for the Eastchester Gardens Apartments, located at 1166 Burke Ave. in the Allerton section of the borough, found the infant at about 8 a.m. Paramedics brought her to the Jacobi Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
At the hospital last night, police were interviewing a 14-year-old girl who may have been the mother of the infant.
Detectives were trying to determine whether the infant was thrown out of a window or left in a patch of grass near the building. No arrests had been made as of last night, police said.
Police were also interviewing the 14-year-old girl’s mother and a 22-year-old man, who may have been the father.
Residents of the building said the police conducted a canvas of the building yesterday morning, knocking on doors and handing out fliers requesting information about the infant.
The Medical Examiner’s office is conducting an autopsy on the infant today. The office will also determine how recently the infant was born, which wasn’t clear yesterday.
Earlier this week, a 14-year-old Bronx girl was convicted of pushing her infant out of a window to its death.
