A riot broke out late Wednesday night after police tried to stop a man from lighting fireworks at a party in Staten Island, police said.

Five police officers were injured and 31 people were arrested at the residence in the New Brighton section of Staten Island, police said. Nineteen people were charged with inciting a riot.

As officers tried to arrest Joseph Bujka, 25, for lighting a firework in front of the home, they were surrounded by about 30 hostile partygoers, police said.

Additional officers were sent to the scene and quelled the riot, police said.

Four officers were sent to Richmond County Medical Center with minor injuries and another was treated for cuts at the scene, police said.
