Arthur Dunkel, the former head of GATT – the predecessor of the World Trade Organization, died Wednesday in Geneva, Switzerland. He was 72.
Dunkel served as director general of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade from 1980 to 1993.
Dunkel’s most significant contribution was his work on an ambitious free trade package – the Uruguay Round of tariff cuts – even though he left office before the treaty was signed in 1994.
