‘Misguided “Munich”‘
I will not be spending a dime to see Steven Spielberg’s fantasy about the tragic massacre of the Israeli athletes at Munich [“Misguided ‘Munich,'” David Twersky; Mitch Webber, Opinion, December 20, 2005].
Unlike Toni Kushner, a writer who has said that the creation of Israel “was a mistake,” I was devastated when I learned of the murder of these brave athletes at the hands of Yasser Arafat’s thugs at Munich in 1972.
It was an obscenity that Avery Brundage allowed the games to continue and I salute the Israeli government for avenging the deaths of the Israeli athletes.
People such as Mr. Spielberg, a super liberal and friend of Bill Clinton, do not make movies just to make money: They also make movies to make a point.
In his arrogance, Mr. Spielberg actually believes that this film “will lead to peace.” It will do no such thing: It will lead to even more misunderstanding of our war on terrorism, especially among those not old to enough to actually remember the terrible Munich massacre and who will see this movie as representing facts rather than Messrs. Kushner and Spielberg’s warped perspective.
