‘Balibar Reaches Back Into the Future’

Has your movie-review page transmogrified into Cahiers du Cinema [Arts & Letters, “Balibar Reaches Back Into the Future,” February 15, 2008]? Steve Dollar’s review of “The Duchess of Langeais” trots out several super-great-but-obscure filmmakers (one of them actually a scriptwriter), prattles about the movie’s obscure female star (including her upbringing, age, divorce, lack or career commitment, and possible pining for the kind of film her present director made when she just out of swaddling clothes), working method of the director and his actors, and how the director “asked the whole of world literature if they wanted to join the crew and write a script” (Balzac, apparently, raised his hand). With nearly 900 words to work with, couldn’t Mr. Dollar be troubled to say whether it’s worth sixteen bucks to see this film?
