Super Bowl LX isn’t until February 8, but the game featuring the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara has already grown into something larger than football. Long before the opening kickoff, the battle for the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy has taken a life beyond the gridiron as social media posts and television talking heads frame their support for the competing teams through the lens of political alliances and ideological identity.Normally, discussion in the days leading up to a Super Bowl center on coaching strategy, quarterback matchups, and key injuries. Analysts discuss strengths and weaknesses. Fans offer blind loyalty, while gamblers focus on point spreads and parlays.But this year is different. A new talking point is leading the charge. A scan of social media reveals the 60th Super Bowl is being measured not only in in-game statistics, but in political affiliation, campaign donations and perceived loyalty or contempt toward the Trump Administration.In some circles support for the Patriots is filtered through the politics of owner Robert Kraft. The billionaire purchased his favorite team in 1994 and is seeking his seventh Super Bowl victory, and first since the departures of coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady.Mr. Kraft, an influential figure in the NFL, has maintained a friendship with Mr. Trump dating back to the 1990s. Though he has traditionally donated to Democratic causes, Mr. Kraft supported Mr. Trump’s first election by contributing $1 million to his 2017 inauguration.But Mr. Kraft offered no financial support for his most recent inauguration and has publicly distanced himself from Mr. Trump, having expressed frustration over the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.Yet, Mr. Kraft’s vocal support of Israel aligns with Mr. Trump, framing the Patriots as a right-leaning team whether fair or not.Meanwhile, Seahawks owner Jody Allen rarely makes political statements or campaign endorsements. Instead, she focuses on philanthropy, conservation causes and civic initiatives amid one of the most socially liberal cities in the United States. The Pacific Northwest’s progressive voting record and tech-driven identity have long placed Seattle on the left of the political map.“I love my woke NFL team,” a Seattle fan posted on XIn truth, Super Bowl 60 was destined to be one of the most political football games in history when the NFL announced last September Bad Bunny would headline the halftime show. The decision ignited a backlash from conservative commentators and figures, including Mr. Trump, who criticized the choice.Bad Bunny has been publicly critical of U.S. immigration policies imposed by the Trump Administration, while conservative voices suggest the Puerto Rican native, who sings primarily in Spanish, doesn’t represent traditional America.What began as a pop-culture entertainment addition to the Super Bowl has turned into a lightning-rod for broader social and political disputes. Conservative group Turning Point USA announced its own “All-American Halftime Show” to run alongside the Super Bowl, offering a counter to Bad Bunny’s performance.Mr. Trump deepened the story line. Last year, he became the first sitting president in history to attend the Super Bowl when he witnessed the Philadelphia Eagles defeat the Kansas City Chiefs at the Superdome in New Orleans.Mr. Trump has remained a visible presence at high-profile sporting events, like the U.S. Open tennis final in New York and most recently the championship of the College Football Playoffs in Miami. Yet, Mr. Trump told the New York Post he won’t be in Santa Clara for this year’s Super Bowl or Bad Bunny’s performance.Initially, Mr. Trump cited distance as being the main reason, saying Levi’s Stadium is “just too far away.” But he later acknowledged he was boycotting both Bad Bunny and the game Green Day, the pregame performer, who has compared Mr. Trump to Hitler.“I’m anti-them,” Mr. Trump said. “I think it’s a terrible choice. All it does is sow hatred.”Adding another layer to an already complex political environment is the expected presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that ICE will conduct immigration enforcement activities in and around Levi’s Stadium throughout Super Bowl weekend.The presence of ICE agents creates a potential for confrontation, particularly following two recent deaths of protesters — Renee Good and Alex Pretti — both shot and killed by federal agents in separate incidents this month. Both incidents are under investigation.Tricia McLaughlin Yoho, assistant secretary for public affairs told TMZ Sports, “The DHS is committed to working with our local and federal partners to ensure the Super Bowl is safe for everyone involved, as we do with every major sporting event, including the World Cup.”For better or for worse, the Super Bowl LX is no longer simply Seahawks versus Patriots and a battle of Xs and Os. It has become a snapshot of a nation where sports, culture and politics are increasingly inseparable.
