Phone-Free Dining Gains Ground as American Bars and Restaurants Restrict Screens

A growing number of restaurants and bars across the United States are embracing a phone-free philosophy, encouraging patrons to disconnect from their digital screens and engage in genuine, face-to-face conversation. Driven by a desire for digital detoxes and more mindful socialization, this trend is rapidly changing the hospitality landscape.The enforcement of these policies varies widely by establishment. While some venues simply ask guests to keep their devices off the table or silence them, others take a much stricter approach — requiring patrons to lock their phones in a secure bag for the duration of their visit, or completely banning devices from the premises altogether.Currently, at least 11 states feature restaurants or bars experimenting with these restrictions, with Washington, D.C., leading the country in phone-free venues, according to Cyberguy.“So much of the buzz is about our phone-free rule,” Hush Harbor — a bar in the nation’s capital known for its no-phone policy — says on its website. “But we’re laser-focused on what we’re giving you: a space to be present and first-class service. We believe that the best memories in life are made together, in the moment. If you’re ready to relax, slow down and have a great night – we’re here to serve you.”The phone-free shift comes as Americans grapple with their screen time; Consumer Affairs data shows the average American checks their phone 144 times a day and spends roughly 4.5 hours looking at a screen.Interestingly, the push to unplug is largely being driven by younger generations. A December 2025 Talker Research survey found that 63 percent of Gen Z intentionally disconnect from their devices, compared to 57 percent of Millennials and just 29 percent of Baby Boomers.Establishments are testing various methods to encourage this behavior. Upscale supper club chain Delilah enforces a strict “no phones, no posting” policy across its locations in cities like Miami and Los Angeles to protect guest privacy and preserve the atmosphere. Even fast-food chains are participating; a Chick-fil-A in Towson Place, Maryland, offers free ice cream to families who keep their devices off the table.At Antagonist, a cocktail bar in Charlotte, North Carolina, guests are asked to place their phones in locked Yondr pouches for about two hours. Co-owner Mike Salzarulo told Axios that the policy was implemented to “build a place that kind of forces you to connect.”As screen fatigue continues to grow, industry experts predict that the hospitality sector will see even more venues offering guests a sanctuary away from their notifications.
