Putting the Soul Back Into America

The United States has produced an extraordinary range of musical styles that have influenced global culture, yet soul music remains unique among these genres. It developed rapidly as the 1950s turned into the 1960s, emerging from a powerful fusion of earlier African-American musical traditions, the vocal harmonies of doo-wop, the spiritual passion of gospel, the raw energy of rhythm and blues, and the sophistication of jazz — to become the defining musical voice of young, aspirational black America.But although firmly rooted in the African-American experience, its themes were universal and deeply human — romance, heartbreak, longing, joy, resilience, and spiritual intensity — and the genre rapidly crossed cultural and geographic boundaries. Innovative record labels such as Tamla Motown, Stax, Atlantic, and Chess Records propelled legendary soul performers including Aretha Franklin, the Supremes, Otis Redding, James Brown, and Marvin Gaye into the pop mainstream.But after its golden years of the 1960s and ‘70s, soul gradually receded from its preeminence on the music scene as hip-hop, house, and electronic dance music came to dominate club culture. By the turn of the 21st century, the music industry and technology-driven production methods had turned traditional soul into a niche market. Yet soul music didn’t disappear. Instead, it survived in smaller scenes and among dedicated musicians, fans, and collectors who continued to appreciate the genre’s emotional depth and organic sound. As the millennium approached, more people began to rebel against the corporate, computer-generated R&B and pop music dominating commercial radio and started seeking out vintage soul to listen and dance to.That’s not to say what is called contemporary R&B lacked soulful artists but the genre had become too much like rap music, and usually included hip-hop beats, drum machines, synthesizers, and looping, often featuring a rapper as a guest artist. Because of these factors modern R&B, and its stars like Beyonce and Drake, were seen as too polished, corporate, and commercially driven to be of interest to the growing number of young soul purists who admired the raw aesthetic of soul’s roots and longed for its return.Therefore, on this 250th anniversary year of the creation of the United States, it is heartening to note that one of America’s greatest cultural gifts to the world — soul music — is enjoying a renewed revival in the nation that gave it birth.Yet the soul music revival can be traced back to the founding of Daptone Records in New York City. This forward-thinking independent label specialized in authentic, vintage-inspired soul, funk, and rhythm and blues recordings. Using its own analog studio and traditional recording methods, Daptone released music by artists such as Sharon Jones, the Dap-Kings, and Charles Bradley, whose powerful voices and classic arrangements evoked the sounds of 1960s soul and funk.Durand Jones & The Indications. ScreenshotYounger listeners — many discovering the genre for the first time — were drawn to the warmth and authenticity of these recordings. Other independent labels followed Daptone’s lead. Ohio-based Colemine Records was formed in 2007 with singer Kelly Finnigan and soul-funk outfit Durand Jones & The Indications becoming their best-known acts. Brooklyn’s Big Crown Records followed a few years later with Lady Wray, Lee Fields and Bobby Oroza heading their artist roster. All three of these labels dedicated themselves to recording and promoting a wave of talented new artists who blended vintage influences with contemporary sensibilities.Another important dimension of the revival can be found in the enduring popularity of lowrider soul, a subculture rooted in the Chicano communities of East Los Angeles and Southern California. Drawing heavily on sweet soul and doo-wop ballads from the 1950s through to the 1970s, lowrider soul became closely associated with the region’s lowrider car culture. The emphasis on romantic ballads, smooth vocal harmonies, and emotionally expressive performances provided a powerful blueprint for the indie soul movement’s own renewed focus on authenticity, tradition, and live gigs.The Chicano soul scene has inspired a new generation of artists including Trish Toledo, Joey Quinones, Thee Sacred Souls, Los Yesterdays, Thee Sinseers, and Thee Lakesiders. East LA duo Thee Lakesiders’ beautifully poignant “Parachute” (2018) became one of the iconic tunes of this movement, resonating strongly with collectors and fans who valued the emotional sincerity, analog warmth of the song and the stylish retro feel of its accompanying video.Thee Lakesiders. ScreenshotIronically for a scene that draws so much inspiration from the past, new technology such as digital distribution, streaming services, and social media has helped these independent labels and new artists reach a global audience without having to be reliant on major corporate backing. Platforms such as YouTube proved especially important: Durand Jones & The Indications’ 2017 single “Is It Any Wonder?” has accumulated an impressive 67 million views while many of the other new soul artists have also proved popular on the video sharing platform, demonstrating the growing international appetite for contemporary soul.Or take Anthony Hamilton. One of the most successful soul singers of recent times, Mr. Hamilton won a Grammy Award in 2009. But his path to success was convoluted. His first album “XTC”, got shelved in 1996 by Uptown Records, an imprint of MCA, but fears the title of one of Mr. Hamilton’s best-known songs “Writing on The Wall” (2011) — nominally about the end of a relationship — would end up applying to his musical genre proved unfounded. Last year the RIAA (The Recording Industry Association of America) presented Mr. Hamilton with an award commemorating 14.5 million domestic sales and his “Soul on Tour” nationwide concert series has extended into 2026 due to popular demand.Anthony Hamilton. Instagram At the same time, the resurgence of vinyl culture amongst DJs and a renewed appreciation for analog recording techniques reinforced the genre’s appeal. For many listeners, modern soul offers something increasingly rare in contemporary pop — authenticity. Live bands, real instruments, and expressive vocal performances all stand in sharp contrast to the heavily processed sounds that dominate so much of today’s digital music landscape.Soul music’s emotional power and cultural significance remain as strong as ever. Driven by independent labels, passionate musicians, and dedicated audiences, the genre is experiencing an exciting new chapter. In an age of algorithm-driven playlists and disposable digital production, the return of soul’s humanity and warmth serves as a powerful reminder that the music — like the spirit of the nation that created it — continues to evolve while honoring its historic roots.
