Scrutiny Increases on Ilhan Omar as Husband’s Winery Shutters Amid Questions About Valuation in Disclosure Forms

Pressure is growing on Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and her husband, Timothy Mynett, amid scrutiny of her finances after it was reported that she filed an amended disclosure form that said that their assets are far less than the $30 million listed on a previous form, and news that her husband’s winery closed amid questions about its valuation from lawmakers.President Trump has repeatedly called for an investigation into Ms. Omar’s finances after a 2024 disclosure form showed her investments were worth $30 million. But last week, the Wall Street Journal reported that the couple filed an amended form for 2024 that said their assets were actually worth between $18,004 and $95,000. Ms. Omar’s spokeswoman, Jacklyn Rogers, has defended the amended disclosure, telling the Wall Street Journal that the updated form “confirms what we’ve said all along: The congresswoman is not a millionaire.” Ms. Rogers said the couple amended the form “voluntarily as soon as the discrepancy was identified.”According to the original 2024 disclosure form, a significant portion of Mr. Mynett’s wealth came from his winery, eStCru LLC, and a venture capital management firm, Rose Lake Capital LLC. Roughly $5 million was attributed to eStCru LLC. But in 2023, the winery was valued at between $15,001 and $50,000. The winery has been a source of controversy for Mr. Mynett. In 2024, it was the subject of a lawsuit from a Washington-area restaurant owner, Naeem Mohd, who alleged that Mr. Mynett promised a 200 percent return in 18 months if he invested $300,000 in the winery. However, Mr. Mohd said he only got back the $300,000 he originally invested. Mr. Mynett and his business partner, Will Hailer, told the Minnesota Reformer that they were not trying to defraud Mr. Mohd and blamed the failure to live up to their promises on industry challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The lawsuit alleged that the pair “fraudulently misrepresented … that eStCru, LLC was a legitimate company.” Lawyers for Mr. Hailer and Mr. Mynett told the Reformer that “any suggestion that Will or Tim deliberately defrauded investors or otherwise consciously conspired to rip people off would be false and defamatory.”They noted that the winery produced a line of wines, such as Overt and Blockchain. The dramatic increase in its valuation over the span of the year, as reported in Ms. Omar’s disclosure form, drew the attention of the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, James Comer, who, in February, sent a letter to Mr. Mynett asking about the increase in the company’s valuation.“There are serious public concerns about how your businesses increased so dramatically in value only a year after reporting very limited assets,” Mr. Comer said in his letter to Mr. Mynett. Rather than tamp down the scrutiny, the amended disclosure form seems to have poured fuel on efforts to investigate the congresswoman and her husband. Mr. Comer suggested on Fox News earlier this week that Ms. Omar might have committed a felony, asking, “Who makes a multimillion-dollar mistake on their financial disclosure form?”“Either her accountant went to one of those ‘Quality Learing Centers’ in Minnesota, or she lied about,” he said. “If she lied about it, that’s a felony.”A lawyer for Ms. Omar told the Journal that the discrepancy was an “unfortunate” accounting error. “As the busiest of people, it is very common for members and their spouses to rely on learned professionals like accountants to make calculations and determinations that appear on public filings,” the lawyer said. “While the error is, of course, unfortunate, there is nothing untoward and nothing illegal has occurred.”The amended form now lists the value of the winery and venture capital firm as “none” when liabilities are factored in. The winery has since been shuttered, according to the California Secretary of State’s business registry portal, which says it was terminated on April 4. eStCru’s website is no longer operational, and the last post on its Instagram page was made in January 2023. Mr. Mynett’s Rose Lake Capital is also slated to shut down this year. Ms. Rogers told Newsweek that Ms. Omar is “not involved in her husband’s businesses” and could not comment on the shuttering of his ventures.The disclosure form is not the only scrutiny Ms. Omar is facing. State lawmakers in Minnesota are demanding that she answer questions about her alleged connections to the Feeding Our Future fraud scandal. Earlier this week, the Minnesota House Fraud Prevention and State Oversight Committee held a hearing focused on the MEALS Act, a pandemic-era relief program that expanded access to federal child nutrition programs, which was sponsored by Ms. Omar.The chairwoman of the committee, Kristin Robbins, told Fox News that the MEALS Act “created the conditions” for the $250 million fraud scheme involving a federally funded child nutrition program to take place. The MEALS Act provided waivers to entities that were not schools, allowing them to receive federal funds for meals provided to underprivileged children.Ms. Robbins, a Republican who is running for governor of Minnesota, sent a letter to Ms. Omar on Wednesday, criticizing her for skipping the hearing and asking for information about how she promoted the “new opportunities” created by the MEALS Act. Ms. Robbins also asked for communications related to Safari Restaurant, which was a major source of fraud in the Feeding Our Future fraud scheme. The restaurant claimed to have provided 3.9 million meals to children between April 2020 and November 2021, and received $16 million in fraudulent federal funds.She noted that Ms. Omar had “highlighted Safari Restaurant as a place where meals were available,” and asked for communications with its owners and staff.While state lawmakers want to hear from Ms. Omar after she skipped their hearing, they have limited authority to compel her to testify or provide the documents that they are seeking. Representatives for Ms. Omar did not respond to the Sun’s request for comment by the time of publication.
