Texas Convictions Validate Trump Move To Label Antifa as Domestic Terrorist Organization

A Texas jury has validated the Trump administration’s bid to label antifa as a domestic terrorist organization by convicting eight individuals on terrorism charges in connection with a violent protest at an immigration detention center last summer. A ninth protester, who shot and wounded a police officer at the Prairieland Detention Center near Fort Worth on July 4, 2025, was convicted of attempted murder after a nearly three-week trial that had become a test case for the administration’s attempt to link antifa with terrorism. Five other individuals involved in the case pleaded guilty in November.Friday’s verdict marks the first time that individuals have been convicted of providing material support to terrorists in a case involving antifa, a loose network of far-left activists. The relevant statutes had previously been used mainly in connection with overseas groups like al-Qaeda and ISIS.While federal law recognizes domestic terrorism as a category of crime, there was no specific chargeable offense with that label before President Trump issued an executive order in September 2025 designating antifa as a domestic terrorist organization.Attorney General Pam Bondi suggested that Friday’s convictions will serve as a precedent for future prosecutions. “Today’s verdict on terrorism charges will not be the last as the Trump administration systematically dismantles Antifa and finally halts their violence on America’s streets,” she said in a press release.According to evidence presented at the trial, roughly a dozen individuals dressed entirely in black appeared with tactical gear and body armor outside the detention center at Alvarado, Texas, and began igniting fireworks in what the prosecution said was an attempt to lure staff outside. Members of the group spray-painted a guard shack and official vehicles with slogans such as “ICE PIG” and “TRAITOR.”When unarmed correctional officers and a local police officer responded to the disturbance, one of the protesters yelled, “get to the rifles” and opened fire, wounding the police officer in the and neck, according to the prosecution. Police arrested most of the protesters shortly afterwards and recovered AR-style rifles, 12 sets of body armor, two-way radios, and military-grade first aid kits.Lawyers for the defendants argued that their clients had intended the protest only as a “noise demonstration” and that they had brought firearms for their own protection. They denied the defendants’ participation in antifa, which they described as a loose term describing an ideology rather than an organization with fixed membership. Antifa is a shortened version of “anti-fascist.”However prosecutors said members of the group, which they described as an “Antifa Cell,” had acquired more than 50 firearms prior to the incident and had engaged in extensive planning on encrypted messaging apps with auto-delete functions.Some critics of the Trump administration have objected to the use of terrorism charges against even violent domestic protesters, suggesting the tactic serves to intimidate potential demonstrators and chill free speech.“A case like this helps the government kind of see how far they can go in criminalizing constitutionally protected protests,” said the interim president of the National Lawyers Guild, a progressive legal group. It “also helps them kind of intimidate, increase the fear, hoping that folks in other cities then will think twice over protesting,” Suzanne Adely told Politico.The wife of Autumn Hill who was convicted Friday, Lydia Koza, said outside the courtroom, “They want to be able to label anyone they don’t like as antifa” and to prosecute people for “ideology, for thought crimes.”However the Immigration and Customs Enforcement director, Todd M. Lyons, said the successful prosecution demonstrates the administration’s refusal to tolerate domestic violence.“These verdicts make clear that those who choose violence over lawful expression will face the full force of the American justice system,” he told the Washington Post. “Those who target federal officers with intimidation, ambush tactics or political violence will be investigated, prosecuted and held accountable.”
