Apple Brings a Touchscreen to the MacBook Pro

Ten years ago, Phil Schiller took to the stage at Apple’s “Hello Again” event to unveil a complete reinvention of the MacBook Pro. Gone were the bulk, the random ports, and the old-school function row: Jony Ive had designed the laptop of the future, with a slimmer version of Apple’s premium unibody aluminum enclosure, novel ultra-low-profile butterfly keyboard switches, mostly USB-C Thunderbolt ports, and a tiny touchscreen panel instead of the function row, displaying customizable, app-specific shortcuts.It was a beautiful, futuristic disaster that was terrible to type on, hard to connect to devices, and constantly annoying to use. Not having a physical escape key was an utter pain, and what you got in exchange was a small screen that nobody optimized apps for.But in 2019, Mr. Ive left Apple, and the company has gradually returned to more conventional designs. The keys have more travel. The body is thicker, for better thermal management and a suite of HDMI port, an SD card slot, and a MagSafe charging connector. With the latest version, a top-end version of the MacBook Pro — which should be called the MacBook Studio but is instead called the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR display — Apple has moved it even further, with the return of its retro glowing logo and the addition of a touchscreen, which Apple has long spurned.The return of the glowing logo is such a simple but compelling thing, and many people will upgrade to this model just to have it — and I get it. Especially since upgrading for the touchscreen is a bit pointless.Steve Jobs long railed against touchscreens, arguing that the ergonomics don’t work, it’s slower and less convenient to use than the trackpad, and it dirties and wobbles the screen — and that, because of all this, users of touchscreen laptops almost never actually use the touchscreen. “We’ve done tons of user testing on this, and it turns out it doesn’t work,” Mr. Jobs said at Apple’s “Back to the Mac” event in 2010. “Touch surfaces don’t want to be vertical. It gives great demo, but after a short period of time you start to fatigue, and after an extended period of time, your arm wants to fall off.”This is all correct. I have long owned touchscreen Windows laptops, thinking I would use the touchscreen semi-regularly, and that has never once come close to being true. And, hilariously, not only has Apple completely ignored its founder’s past statements, but it’s done almost nothing to fix these issues with the new MacBook.The touch interface seems more responsive than on Windows laptops, for example, courtesy of the touch sensor sitting right inside the panel, and Apple says the new hinge makes it more stable. But it still wobbles in demonstration videos, and Apple’s demonstrations of what touch is useful for are extremely forced.The big improvement is that macOS seems well optimized for touch. When you tap a button, the submenu within opens in a larger, more touch-friendly size than when you click with the trackpad, and you can open various settings with swipes. But the fact it is just a layer on top of an otherwise cursor-optimized operating system speaks to how little Apple expects the touchscreen to be used, compared to the OS on something like the iPad. Apple MacBook Pro.That said, setting aside the touchscreen capability, this is an incredibly impressive screen. It’s Apple’s first OLED screen on a laptop, and is one of the most advanced OLEDs on the market, using two layers of light-emitting diodes to get deep blacks, an impressive an impressive dynamic range, and impressive peak brightness. It’s also still a high refresh rate screen, scaling between 10 hertz and 120 hertz, and once you’ve used a screen with a high refresh rate like this, you can never go back to a slow one — though you’ve been able to get that on every 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro since 2021, though not on the MacBook Air.Apple MacBook Pro.The other hardware changes are relatively minor. Apple has replaced the ugly notch with a less ugly Dynamic Island, like the iPhones — though, inexplicably, it still doesn’t have Face ID — and the whole laptop is a bit lighter and thinner. The models offer a choice of M5 Pro or M5 Max chips whose specs are hard to connect to reality, other than to say they are overkill for the vast majority of people who buy this laptop.Apple MacBook Pro.In short, the touchscreen is the least interesting thing about them, but these look to be Apple’s best, most stylish, feature-rich MacBooks ever. And at these prices, they need to be.The 14-inch MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR display starts at $2,899 with an M5 Pro — $400 more than the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the same chip — and the 16-inch M5 Pro starts at $3,399, up $400 on the equivalent 16-inch MacBook Pro. The 14-inch M5 Max starts at $4,499, and the 16-inch M5 Max at $4,799 — and if you want to get the fully loaded version, with 128GB of RAM, 16TB of storage, and nano-texture glass, you’re paying $14,549.And even if you do, after the first month, I promise you won’t use the touchscreen.
