The Long and Winding August: How So Many Beatles Milestones Happened in One Month

Meet the Emperor Augustus, the great-nephew and adopted son and heir of Julius Caesar. When Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC, the 18-year-old Octavian began an extraordinary rise to power. Few believed he could survive in a ruthless Rome, yet such was his political genius that, as Augustus, he created a system of government that would endure for centuries. In his honor, the Roman Senate renamed the month of Sextilis as Augustus. Many of the emperor’s greatest triumphs had taken place during that month, and over time August came to be associated with harvest, abundance and fulfillment.Two thousand and twelve years later, I found myself connecting Augustus with The Beatles. How? By asking a simple question. If books can be written about a single year in a band’s career, could one be written about a single month?The answer is yes. Because in the month of August, The Beatles experienced a remarkable succession of milestones that shaped their story forever. From the events that forged the band to the moments that transformed them into the biggest musical phenomenon the world had ever seen — and, ultimately, to the beginning of the end — August became the defining month in The Beatles’s extraordinary journey.Back in August 1957, John Lennon’s skiffle group, The Quarrymen, made their debut at the Cavern Club on Liverpool’s Mathew Street. Paul McCartney had met John the previous month and had been invited to join the group, but he was away at Scout camp and missed the performance.Nobody present could have imagined that this cramped cellar would become the spiritual home of the Beatles. It was here they built their first devoted following. It was here Brian Epstein first saw them perform and decided to become their manager. It was here they were filmed for the first time. It was here a record company scout came to watch them, leading to the famous Decca audition, where A&R executive Dick Rowe rejected the group in one of the most notorious decisions in music history.During that first appearance at the Cavern, Lennon slipped Elvis Presley’s “Don’t Be Cruel” into the set. The club’s owner, Alan Sytner, had banned rock ‘n’ roll, preferring jazz and skiffle. Halfway through the performance, Sytner scribbled a note and sent it to the stage. Thinking it was a request from the audience, John grinned and announced, “We’ve had a request.” He unfolded the paper. It read simply: “Cut out the bloody rock ‘n’ roll.”History could hardly have provided a more fitting metaphor. The music that would soon change the world had just been told to keep quiet.Three years later, on August 16 1960, The Beatles — John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe and newly recruited drummer Pete Best — left Liverpool for Hamburg, Germany. It was the journey that transformed them. Over the next two and a half years they would make five trips to the city, performing first at the Indra Club, then the Kaiserkeller, the Top Ten Club, and finally the Star-Club.Hamburg became the Beatles’ university. Playing seven or eight hours a night, they developed astonishing stamina, sharpened their musicianship, learned how to command an audience and built the stagecraft that would later astonish the world. They experimented with their image, adopting leather jackets and a tougher, more confident attitude, while absorbing every style of music they encountered. The Beatles had become an electrifying live band.Yet one problem remained. Although Pete Best had become immensely popular with fans, the other Beatles had grown increasingly dissatisfied with his drumming. On August 16 1962, Brian Epstein informed Best that he was no longer a member of the group. Two days later, on August 18, Richard Starkey — better known to the world as Ringo Starr — played his first engagement as a Beatle at Hulme Hall in Port Sunlight. The classic Beatles line-up was finally complete: In August.Following the release of “She Loves You” on August 22 1963, scenes of mass hysteria accompanied them wherever they went. It was a sound, a deafening roar of excitement, that would soon be replicated across the world. Beatlemania was born in August.The following August, 1964, The Beatles carried that phenomenon to America when they embarked on their first full American tour. During the visit, on August, they met Bob Dylan at New York’s Delmonico Hotel and smoked marijuana with him for the first time. Bob Dylan’s influence proved profound, encouraging Lennon in particular to move beyond conventional love songs and write more personal, introspective lyrics.The results were evident less than a year later. On 6 August 1965, The Beatles released their fifth album, “Help!” It stands as the bridge between the exuberant pop group that had conquered the world and the adventurous, groundbreaking artists they were about to become.The title track, though wrapped in an irresistible pop melody, concealed John’s own cry for help. “I was fat and depressed,” he later admitted. The album also reflected Dylan’s influence in songs such as “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away,” and at the centre of the album stood “Yesterday,” one of the most covered songs in popular music history. Less than two weeks later, they visited Elvis Presley at his Los Angeles home, completing a remarkable circle that had begun eight years earlier when John Lennon defiantly slipped Elvis songs into The Quarrymen’s set at the Cavern Club.Earlier that year, Lennon and George Harrison had unknowingly taken LSD after their London dentist secretly dosed them during a dinner party. The experience profoundly affected both men. On August 24 1965, just three days before meeting Elvis, Lennon and Harrison took LSD again in Los Angeles with members of the Byrds and actor Peter Fonda. During the evening, Harrison became convinced he was dying. Trying to reassure him, Fonda repeatedly said, “I know what it’s like to be dead,” recalling a childhood shooting accident in which he had briefly died. The remark unsettled Lennon, but he never forgot it. Months later it resurfaced in one of his greatest songs, “She Said She Said” that appeared on their sixth and hugely ground breaking album Revolver released — of course in August 1966.For many critics, “Revolver,” is The Beatles’ greatest achievement, the album which they had been steadily moving towards. Here they abandoned every remaining convention of pop music, embracing tape loops, backwards recordings, Indian instruments, and psychedelic soundscapes. Songs such as “Tomorrow Never Knows,” inspired by Lennon’s LSD experiences — he asked producer George Martin to make his vocal sound like the Dalai Lama chanting from the highest mountain — redefined what a rock album could be. It was no longer simply a collection of songs but a work of artistic imagination.But August could not forever bring The Beatles triumph, artistic inspiration, and good fortune. On August 29 1966, exhausted by the relentless pressures of Beatlemania, the band played their final commercial concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. It marked the end of four years of almost continuous touring. They would not perform together in public again until January 1969, when they gave their legendary London rooftop concert from the top of Apple headquarters at 3 Savile Row. On August 27 1967, Brian Epstein — the man who had done more than anyone outside the group to make The Beatles possible — died from an accidental overdose of the sleeping drug Carbital, mixed with alcohol. He was only thirty-two. His death marked the emotional turning point in the Beatles’s story. In the months that followed, Paul McCartney increasingly assumed the role of the band’s unofficial leader, urging the others back into the studio and trying to maintain the momentum that Epstein had so effortlessly managed. Yet, remarkably, the band’s creative powers remained undiminished.At the tail end of August 1968, The Beatles released one of the greatest singles in popular music: “Hey Jude.” It was the first Beatles single to appear on their own Apple label, signaling a new chapter in the group’s independence. At more than seven minutes long, it shattered the accepted limits of what a pop single could be. Despite industry fears that radio stations would refuse to play it, the record became a worldwide phenomenon. It spent nine weeks at number one in America— a Beatles record — and its unforgettable “na-na-na” coda still echoes around British soccer grounds more than half a century later.Mr. McCartney wrote the song to comfort Julian Lennon after John left Cynthia Lennon for Yoko Ono. Originally titled “Hey Jules,” Paul changed it to “Hey Jude” because it simply sounded better. He was right.The following August produced one of the most iconic photographs in history. On August 8 1969 The Beatles stepped outside EMI Studios to be photographed crossing the zebra crossing on Abbey Road in London’s St. John’s Wood. Iain MacmillanIts details have been analysed endlessly. John appears dressed in white, Ringo in black, George in denim, while Paul walks barefoot. That last visual feature helped fuel the bizarre conspiracy theory that Paul McCartney had died in 1966 and been replaced by a lookalike. Quite how a songwriter of Mr. McCartney’s extraordinary gifts could be replaced was never convincingly explained, but the myth refused to die.What had died was something far more important: The Beatles’s unique chemistry. Four young men who had shared an extraordinary journey from Liverpool to global immortality were no longer united by the same dream. Lennon had found a new creative and emotional partnership with Yoko Ono. George Harrison was increasingly frustrated that his songwriting was overshadowed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Ringo Starr had grown weary of the endless recording sessions and briefly quit the band. Mr. McCartney, as always, tried to hold everything together, but this time even he could not prevent the inevitable. The Beatles would officially break up the following year, but in many ways the story had reached its natural conclusion.Every day, tourists from across the world line up the zebra crossing to recreate that famous Abbey Road photograph, hoping to capture a little of that Beatle magic. However, if they really want the Gods to smile upon them, I would advise they take the photograph in August.
