‘The View’ Holds Off Interviewing Democrats in Competitive Races Amid FCC Equal Time Investigation, Report Finds

While the Federal Communications Commission is weighing whether ABC’s “The View” should be considered a bona fide news program, and therefore exempt from equal time requirements, the daytime talk show has held off interviewing Democratic candidates in competitive races, according to a new analysis. The FCC’s equal time rule requires that broadcast programs provide legally qualified candidates an equal opportunity for airtime if one of their opponents uses the station’s facilities. The regulator has been investigating “The View” for an alleged equal-time rule violation involving a February interview with a Democrat running for the U.S. Senate in Texas, James Talarico. His primary opponent, Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, appeared several times before the interview, but she was not interviewed soon after the Mr. Talarico’s February appearance.Amid the investigation, an analysis of the guest on “The View” says the program has backed away from interviewing candidates in competitive midterm races since the investigation began in February, according to Semafor. However, “The View” has interviewed well-known political figures, such as Vice President Vance and Senators Chris Murphy and Cory Booker. Mr. Vance and Mr. Murphy are not on the ballot this year. Mr. Booker, who was interviewed in March, is running for re-election this fall; however, he did not face a primary challenger. The show also turned down requests from previous guests, according to Semafor, which reported that the program’s bookers rejected a proposal from a “representative” of Mayor Zohran Mamdani to interview the mayor and two of the Democratic Socialist candidates he supports, Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier.“The View said it was interested in having the mayor on, but indicated it couldn’t accommodate Avila Chevalier or Valdez, now Democratic congressional nominees,” Semafor reported. “Among other reasons, the show’s staff noted that it was proceeding cautiously with political candidate bookings while the FCC’s equal time inquiry was progressing.”A “network source” told Semafor that the “actual impact” of the FCC investigation has been limited. The source said that the show “largely focuses” on booking celebrities, and that it would be “highly unusual” to book multiple unelected political figures. Though the comment does not address the lack of interviews with politicians running for reelection in competitive races, such as Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff, who is seen as one of the most vulnerable Democratic senators up for reelection and has not appeared on the show recently.“The View” has routinely interviewed Democratic officials and presidential candidates. In recent months, the program has branched out somewhat, hosting conservatives such as ones with a former Trump attorney, Alina Habba, and Mr. Vance. The absence of Democratic guests running competitive races also comes as the FCC is reviewing whether “The View” qualifies as a bona fide news program, which would make it exempt from the equal time rule. To qualify for such an exemption, the FCC says shows must book their guests “based on newsworthiness” and not an “attempt to oppose or support particular candidates.”ABC launched an ad campaign asking viewers to tell the regulator that “The View” is a news program and accused the government of trying to control who it can book.
