Trump Calls for Immediate Negotiations on Greenland, Saying He Won’t Use Force To Seize the Island

President Trump is continuing his demand for control of Greenland but claims he will not use force to take it.“I don’t have to use force. I don’t want to use force. I won’t use force,” Mr. Trump said during a speech Wednesday at the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland.Mr. Trump called for immediate negotiations for America to acquire Greenland claiming that it is in danger of falling into Chinese or Russian hands.“What I’m asking for is a piece of ice, cold and poorly located, that can play a vital role in world peace and world protection,” Mr. Trump said. “It’s a very small ask compared to what we have given them for many, many decades.”Mr. Trump then issued a warning. “You can say yes and we will be very appreciative. Or you can say no and we will remember,” Mr. Trump said.Mr. Trump, who referred to Greenland as “Iceland,” said that America alone could protect it. He says the island is strategic for construction of his so-called Golden Dome air defense project.“This enormous, unsecured island is actually part of North America on the northern frontier of the Western Hemisphere,” Mr. Trump said. ” “That’s our territory. Therefore, it is a core national security interest of the United States of America.”The leaders of Denmark and Greenland have repeatedly rebuffed Mr. Trump’s efforts and several European leaders have also said America needs to respect the sovereignty of the semi-autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark.On Saturday, Mr. Trump announced in a Truth Social post that eight European countries which have denounced his efforts to annex Greenland, including the United Kingdom, will now face a ten percent tariff beginning February 1. The tariff is set to increase to 25 percent on June 1 “until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland.”The threat over Greenland is putting a significant strain on the North American Treaty Alliance, which has provided collective security to Europe and North America since 1949.Mr. Trump referenced NATO several times in Wednesday’s address.“This would not be a threat to NATO. This would greatly enhance the security of the entire alliance, the NATO alliance,” Mr. Trump said. “The United States is treated very unfairly by NATO, I’ll tell you that.”“The problem with NATO is that we’ll be there for them one hundred percent but I’m not sure they’ll be there for us,” Mr. Trump added.
