Trump Has ‘Asked’ Kimberly Guilfoyle To Resign as Ambassador to Greece, His New Press Secretary Discloses

White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia made news in her first official briefing, disclosing that the administration has asked ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle to step down amid a swirling scandal. It comes after Ms. Guilfoyle demanded that a Trump donor, Eric Deters, wire her $100,000 in order to pay off a credit card bill in exchange for access to members of the administration, according to reporting by The Wall Street Journal. The demand was made ahead of her confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 2025, apparently in an effort to eliminate her debt before turning over her financial disclosure forms.Mr. Deters eventually declined, though not before Ms. Guilfoyle demanded that he “stop papering” their conversations — meaning putting their discussions on text messages — because she could get in trouble. “We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign,” Katie Zacharia said from the podium. “She has been a wonderful asset to the team and we wish her well.”The declaration caught at least a few reporters off guard, as one was seen raising her eyebrows and another appeared to say a surprised “oh.”The move follows President Trump saying on Monday that he was considering dismissing her. “We’re looking at it, yeah,” Mr. Trump said of a potential firing. “We’re not happy.”Two days before Mr. Trump made his comments, The Journal published a second story on Ms. Guilfoyle’s actions while serving as ambassador to Greece. According to The Journal, Ms. Guilfoyle took a private jet from Greece to Davos, Switzerland, for the annual World Economic Forum summit, and demanded admittance to a dinner being hosted by the president’s younger son, Eric Trump. She flew on the plane of a wealthy Greek construction tycoon, Alexandros Exarchou, and promised him the “world” and to make him “a lot of f–ing money.”Shortly after the first report was published, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Congressman Gregory Meeks, demanded that Secretary of State Marco Rubio conduct an investigation into Ms. Guilfoyle. Mr. Meeks specifically sought answers about Ms. Guilfoyle’s relationship with a lobbyist for a Greek construction firm, the Aktor Group, as well as comments she allegedly made about America being about to impact the governing coalitions of European governments. Ms. Guilfoyle has remained silent on recent reports swirling around her conduct, but her attorneys moved to address the controversy head-on in a statement issued late Sunday. The statement firmly denied any wrongdoing on Ms. Guilfoyle’s part, asserting that the funds she sought from a Trump donor were legitimate payment for prior work.According to her lawyers, David Schwartz and Jesse Binnall, the money in question was compensation for “public appearances and speaking engagements that predate her ambassadorial nomination” — services they say had gone unpaid. The attorneys also pushed back against claims of impropriety tied to Ms. Guilfoyle’s use of private aircraft. They maintained that she followed proper protocol every time, stating that before each trip she “sought, obtained and followed State Department guidance and followed the Department’s travel regulations.”Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who publicly backed Ms. Guilfoyle when the controversy first surfaced, has since gone quiet on the matter. His most recent comment, offered last week, was brief: “Our ambassador has been a strong ambassador here.”Meanwhile, a U.S. official, speaking anonymously to the Associated Press, confirmed that the State Department’s inspector general is examining the allegations. It remains unclear whether a formal investigation by the inspector general has officially begun. Such inquiries are often preliminary in nature, and many never escalate into full investigations. When they do, however, the consequences can be severe — ranging from disciplinary action to outright dismissal.
