Trump Says He Will Sue New York Times After It Releases Poll Showing Significant Drop in Approval Rating

President Trump says he will sue the New York Times after the outlet released its poll, conducted in partnership with Siena College, on Thursday showing that Mr. Trump’s approval rating has fallen dramatically in the last 12 months. The president says that publishing “fake” polls — which he says describes the Times–Siena survey — should be considered a “criminal” act. Mr. Trump has had a notably litigious year since returning to the White House, settling lawsuits with Paramount, Disney, and Meta, and threatening to sue many other individuals and companies. He is currently in the process of suing the Wall Street Journal and Ruper Murdoch for $10 billion after the outlet reported on the existence of a letter Mr. Trump allegedly sent Jeffrey Epstein for his 50th birthday. On Thursday, however, Mr. Trump says he is suing solely because he does not like the content of the poll results. He says that the numbers — which show his job approval rating 17 points underwater — should not have been published. “The Times Siena Poll, which is always tremendously negative to me, especially just before the Election of 2024, where I won in a Landslide, will be added to my lawsuit against The Failing New York Times,” Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social. He is currently suing the Times for $15 billion for defamation, arguing that the outlet painted him in a negative light during the 2024 campaign. “Our lawyers have demanded that they keep all Records, and how they ‘computed’ these fake results — Not just the fact that it was heavily skewed toward Democrats. They will be held fully responsible for all of their Radical Left lies and wrongdoing!” Mr. Trump wrote. The poll results themselves are quite devastating for the president, given how quickly his job approval rating has fallen in the last 12 months according to other pollsters beyond the Times–Siena survey. The results show Mr. Trump with an approval rating of only 30 percent, and a disapproval rating of 57 percent. That closely tracks with the results from voters when asked about the direction the country is headed. Just 36 percent say America is on the right path, while 56 percent say it is on the wrong path. On the economy, Mr. Trump received some especially devastating news, given that his 2024 campaign message focused heavily on making life more affordable after several years of persistent inflation. The Times–Siena survey finds that only 29 percent of Americans believe the economy is “excellent” or “good,” while 70 percent say it is either “fair” or “poor.”Beyond his threat to sue the Times, Mr. Trump launched into other attacks against polling more generally. “Something has to be done about Fraudulent Polling. Even the Polls of FoxNews and The Wall Street Journal have been, over the years, terrible!” Mr. Trump wrote in a second Truth Social post on Thursday. “Isn’t it sad what has happened to American Journalism, but I am going to do everything possible to keep this Polling SCAM from moving forward!”“Something has to be done about Fake Polls! They are truly OUT OF CONTROL,” he wrote. A broadside against the Times wasn’t the only lawsuit Mr. Trump announced. On Wednesday, the chief executive of JP Morgan Chase, Jamie Dimon, said at the World Economic Forum that Mr. Trump’s demand for a ten percent cap on credit card interest rates would be an “economic disaster.” Less than 24 hours later, Mr. Trump announced he was suing the bank and Mr. Dimon for $5 billion. The lawsuit, which was first reported by Fox News, alleges that Mr. Trump was “debanked” for political reasons in 2021, despite doing business at the company for decades. It was filed in state court, where the president is now demanding a jury trial.
