UK Police Launch Criminal Investigation Into Peter Mandelson Following Latest Epstein Files Disclosures

Fallout from the latest Jeffrey Epstein files release has now taken down a member of Great Britain’s House of Lords and prompted a criminal investigation of the former high-ranking government official and former ambassador to Washington.On Tuesday, Scotland Yard announced that it was opening an investigation into Lord Peter Mandelson for what it called “misconduct in public office” after the newly released Epstein files showed he may have shared market-sensitive information in an email with the convicted sex offender following the 2008 global financial crisis, including early notice of a 500 billion bailout of the euro.Lord Mandelson had already lost his job as ambassador to Washington and resigned from the governing Labour Party because of his connection to the former financier, who killed himself in prison in 2019. Tuesday, he also resigned from the House of Lords, the Parliament’s upper chamber.In another email exchange with Epstein, Lord Mandelson suggested he would lobby other members of the UK government to reduce a tax on bonuses for bankers. Lord Mandelson was the business secretary in Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s government at the time of the emails.“The Met will continue to assess all relevant information brought to our attention as part of this investigation and won’t be commenting any further at this time,” Scotland Yard said in a statement.The prime minister, Sir Keir Starmer, previously said he handed over information to the police ahead of the investigation. The prime minister told his cabinet on Tuesday that he was appalled by the leaks and asked officials to draft legislation to strip Lord Mandelson of his seat.“For the public to see politicians saying they can’t recall receiving significant sums of money or not was just gobsmacking, causing them to lose faith in all politicians and weaken trust still further,” Sir Keir told the cabinet, according to the Guardian.Other documents in the latest Epstein files release show that Epstein apparently sent $75,000 to accounts linked to Lord Mandelson or his partner, Reinaldo Avila da Silva.In one document from 2003, Lord Mandelson scribbled “my best pal” in a birthday book of greetings for Epstein. Five years later, while Epstein was in prison in Florida for soliciting underage women, Lord Mandelson wrote, in support of Epstein’s early release from prison, that he thought “the world” of Epstein.A photo of Lord Mandelson — who is openly gay and has been married to Mr. Avila since 2023 — in his underwear in Epstein’s Paris apartment was also in the latest document release. Lord Mandelson is showing a woman dressed in a white bathrobe what appeared to be a document or photo. The woman’s face is blacked out in the photo.Lord Mandelson had been a major figure in the Labour Party for decades and had the nickname the Prince of Darkness for his ruthless political style. Prime Minister Starmer named him as ambassador to Washington at the start of President Trump’s second term. Sir Keir now faces questions over his vetting of Lord Mandelson.The prime minister reportedly told his cabinet that he fears more scandals will be uncovered in the coming days from the Epstein documents. Lord Mandelson and the former prince, Andrew, are facing persistent calls to testify in America about their friendship with Epstein.Mr. Mandelson, In his resignation letter to the Labour Party, said he was “sorry for ever having known” Epstein and apologized “to the women and girls whose voices should have been heard long before now.”
