Virginia House Probe Threatens Historic Military School’s Funding, Angering Republicans

Democrats in Virginia’s House of Delegates have introduced a resolution establishing a task force to investigate the Virginia Military Institute, a move that could determine whether the historic military college continues to receive state funding. The resolution marks an effort in the state to reinvigorate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion policies that were dismantled following the election of President Trump in 2024. However, the proposal has drawn sharp condemnation from Republican leaders, who say the investigation threatens the institution’s future.“This takes away from VMI, takes away from its mission,” a Republican congressman, Rob Wittman, told Fox News. “I think that it’s harmful to the Commonwealth of Virginia, harmful to VMI as an institution, harmful to all the incredible military leaders and community leaders that have come out of VMI.”Founded in 1839, VMI is the nation’s oldest public senior military college and has produced notable graduates including America’s current ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, and General Dan “Raizin” Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.Mr. Wittman, a Virginia Tech graduate and member of the House Armed Services Committee, called the move “reprehensible,” saying, “It seems to be what’s happening in Richmond.”The proposed task force follows the election of Governor Abigail Spanberger, a Democrat who has faced swift backlash from Republicans over her appointments and policy shifts. Critics point specifically to her appointment of a former governor, Ralph Northam, to VMI’s Board of Visitors. In 2021, Mr. Northam ordered a state-sanctioned investigation into VMI’s DEI structure to examine issues of racism and sexism.Congressman Pat Fallon, a Texas Republican who serves on the House Armed Services Committee, blamed Ms. Spanberger directly.“Less than a month in office as governor of Virginia, Abigail Spanberger has shown a commitment to turning the commonwealth into California,” Mr. Fallon said. “The left’s renewed focus on VMI is not intended to benefit our military. Instead, it’s yet another avenue to tear down an institution that has developed exceptional leaders.”Mr. Fallon further criticized the appointment of Mr. Northam, calling it “an insult to our nation’s oldest state-supported military school.”The legislative push comes months after VMI’s governing board voted in September to modify its bylaws regarding diversity and inclusion. The board reassigned “mental and physical health” and “diversity and inclusion” oversight from the Cadet and Personnel Affairs Committee to the newly renamed Operations and Personnel Affairs Committee. That committee now oversees “inclusive excellence” alongside human resources, Title IX, and post safety, the Virginia Mercury reported. The changes followed years of scrutiny over the school’s approach to DEI. In 2023, an appointee of Ms. Spanberger’s Republican predecessor declared that “DEI is dead” at the institute.Conservatives, including the Spirit of VMI PAC, have strongly opposed DEI initiatives at the school, urging supporters to “reject the woke assault on VMI.”If the legislation passes and state funding is revoked, proponents of the school fear VMI may not survive.“There is no logic, there is no logical reason why you would do this,” Mr. Wittman said. “If you have issues with VMI, many of those have played out in years past, the institution has done everything that the General Assembly has asked for them to do.”
