Whoopi Goldberg Criticized for ‘Hijacking’ the Bible To Challenge Vance on His Immigration Views

ABC’s Whoopi Goldberg is facing criticism after she pressed Vice President Vance to explain how he can support the Trump Administration’s immigration policies due to his Catholic faith. On Tuesday, Mr. Vance made his first-ever appearance on “The View,” with the stated goal of promoting his new book, “Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith.” Despite the co-hosts’ history of attacking Mr. Vance, there was a mostly cordial atmosphere during the discussion. However, Ms. Goldberg has been criticized over her decision to challenge the vice president on his immigration stance.“You talk a lot about your Catholic faith. But the Catholic faith says we take in immigrants … how do you justify both things?” she asked.Mr. Vance responded, “Immigration [enforcement] is law enforcement. It’s somebody who’s broken a law; a law enforcement officer has to show up and enforce that law.”The vice president said that enforcement of immigration law is “not always going to be pretty” when federal immigration officers are captured on video while carrying out their duties. He added, “What I’m saying is, the Catholic faith … strikes the right balance.”“It says … that you can have borders. You’re allowed to enforce your borders. That means the law enforcement piece of it. But you also have to take certain precautions and certain care. Your argument is, fundamentally, Whoopi, you’re saying we don’t strike the right balance,” he said. “I disagree with you about how we apply that. But nobody, hopefully, is saying we’re not allowed to have a border. What I’m saying is that in order for us to actually enforce the law, you can’t set a standard that says you’re not allowed to deport anyone unless they’ve committed a violent crime. You gotta enforce the law equally and justly.”Conservative commentators criticized Ms. Goldberg for her line of questioning. A conservative account accused her of “hijacking the Bible to make the case for open borders.”A Fox News columnist, David Marcus, wrote on X, “Kennedy had to convince the country he wouldn’t govern it based on his Catholic faith, 66 years later, why is Vance being asked to do that very thing?”“Bad faith people will use your standards to try to arm twist you while holding to themselves to absolutely none,” another user wrote.Another user asked, “Since when did the View care about any form of Christian faith?”An author, Bob Madison, wrote, “People like Whoopi Goldberg always quote the Bible or faith when they want you to bend to their will … but retreat like vampires before the cross if you use it to defend your own positions.”Mr. Vance has previously defended the Trump Administration’s immigration policies, while expressing disappointment with Catholic leaders who have criticized them. In January 2025, he told CBS News’s “Face the Nation” that he was “heartbroken” that the U.S. Conference of Bishops condemned the administration’s immigration crackdown.
