Wikipedia Allowed Anonymous User To Scrub El-Sayed’s Page Before Election

An anonymous Wikipedia account spent much of the last month scrubbing Michigan Senator-elect Abdul el-Sayed’s page of controversial details, according to a critic of the online encyclopedia, raising new questions about the facts behind the incoming senator’s positions and associations.A journalist who tracks “coordinated narrative manipulation” on Wikipedia, Ashley Rindsberg, wrote on X this week that the CopyleftEverything editor account removed allegations of antisemitism and material about Dr. El-Sayed’s ties to Hasan Piker, a controversial Twitch streamer. The person behind the CopyLeftEverything account has not been identified.On October 10, the account trimmed a passage that read: “During the Democratic primary, Hasan Piker, a controversial and left-wing Twitch streamer and political commentator, appeared with El-Sayed at two campus rallies.” It cut the description of Mr. Piker as controversial, commenting that it was “insanely funny” to focus on the streamer without discussing President Trump.The entry was given Wikipedia’s “extended confirmed protection” status, meaning only users with certain editing permissions can add or edit text. The “extended confirmed” status is automatically given to users who have made 500 edits. Wikipedia maintains a 30-day waiting period from the time of an editor’s first edit before being given that status.A co-founder of Wikipedia, Larry Sanger, who left the project in 2002 over objections about its lack of oversight and contributors’ anonymity, is also raising transparency concerns about who is behind the changes to Dr. El-Sayed’s page, and other pages on the platform.“We don’t know; they might be paid by the Chinese or some other agency or for that matter just powerful, very wealthy individuals who are trying to control the conversation,” Mr. Sanger said during a conversation on the X show “Tailspin” Wednesday evening.Mr. Sanger repeated concerns expressed by others that corrections to information on Wikipedia will continue to be deleted by those who don’t want the corrected information seen by the public. Dr. El-Sayed’s page shows more than 1,200 edits have made, of which 80 percent were categorized as “major.” CopyleftEverything was responsible for roughly 12 percent of the characters on the page. The account also removed a paragraph about Dr. El-Sayed’s response to the March attack at Michigan’s Temple Israel synagogue, in which he said, “Hurt people hurt people.” The account added a section that claimed the Republican Senate candidate in Michigan, Mike Rogers, believed that AIPAC’s brand was “too toxic.”CopyleftEverything’s user page says it is focused on “left-of-center political groups” and has made hundreds of edits to pages about the American Communist Party, the Party for Socialism and Liberation, and the Revolutionary Communists of America.Mr. Sanger told “Tailspin” Wikipedia does not provide a range of opinions or viewpoints in its entries. “Wikipedia pages reflect the mainstream views and the leading views in each field,” he said. “The unapproved views are many, so there’s a lot of stuff that you can’t learn on Wikipedia.”It was not clear when Wikipedia added the “extended confirmed” protection to Dr. El-Sayed’s page, and whether details about Mr. Piker were added by an account with that required status, or if they were added at a time when the page was open to the general public to edit. Wikipedia did not respond to The New York Sun’s request for comment. While Dr. El-Sayed’s page was protected, Mr. Rogers’ page was left open to the public. In the month before November 3, a battle ensued over the Republican’s page.An account known as Starvollr called Mr. Rogers, the opioid industry’s “congressional face.” The account also wrote that a bill he advocated to expand treatment for chronic pain was “planned and heavily pushed by opioid manufacturers like Purdue Pharma.”Those sections were repeatedly removed and restored by various users throughout October.
