The curator who helped raise the profile of UCLA’s Hammer Museum, Gary Garrels, is leaving his position to join the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art as its senior curator of painting and sculpture, the Los Angeles Times reported Monday.
Mr. Garrels, who worked at the Museum of Modern Art in New York until 2005, is replacing Madeleine Grynsztejn, who left in March to direct the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. Mr. Garrels is credited with having launched the celebrated Hammer Contemporary Collection, which now stands at nearly 1,000 works.
