Beer-Besotted Germans Buy More Buzz-Free Brew

The birthplace of Oktoberfest is hoisting more non-alcoholic beers as a trend to abstain from alcohol accelerates in Germany.The Federal Statistics Office, in newly released figures, says Germany’s output of non-alcoholic beer grew 6.5 percent in 2025. More than 616 million liters of non-alcoholic beer, worth approximately 696 million euros, were produced in the country.Beer with alcohol, however, remains significantly more popular in Germany. In 2025, breweries in Germany produced approximately 6.8 billion liters of alcoholic beer, but production dropped about 5.8 percent, tracking closely with the rise of non-alcoholic beer. The statistics office said while there were approximately 12.5 liters of alcoholic beer produced for every liter of non-alcoholic beer in 2024, it dropped to 11.1 liters by 2025.The statistics showed production in beer-based mixed drinks with a lower alcohol content than regular beer is also declining, showing a growing trend for customers to completely avoid alcohol.The first non-alcoholic beers came to the German market just over fifty years ago and sales remained stable until 2007. Sales started growing slowly in the years that followed and the trend is now accelerating.Due to the production processes, non-alcoholic beers can contain up to 0.5 percent alcohol by volume. The German Brewers Association says that amount of alcohol is so minimal that it has no physiological effect. The brewers association says alcohol-free wheat beers and pilsners, as well as regional specialties like Altbier and Kölsch, are particularly popular in Germany. All alcohol-free beers brewed in Germany comply with the German Purity Law and consist exclusively of natural ingredients. Compared to alcoholic and some non-alcoholic beverages like juices and sodas, the alcohol-free beers contain fewer calories.Germany is not alone in the trend. Non-alcoholic beer is a fast-growing segment of the American beverage industry. America’s Brewers Association says non-alcohol beers have experienced double-digit growth in sales and volume each year for at least the past four. The market share for non-alcoholic drinks in America does still lag numbers in Europe but the gap is expected to rapidly shrink. The number of companies — aiming to take advantage of the trend — producing non-alcoholic beers and cocktails in America has jumped more than 100 percent in the past four years. There are now nearly 500 brands of non-alcoholic beers and cocktails on American store shelves, according to the association.Younger Americans are drinking less overall but a large segment of growth in non-alcoholic beer sales comes from beer drinkers who are not replacing traditional beer outright but drinking them on separate occasions. A 2025 Beer Institute poll found that 60 percent of Americans participating in Dry January believe no-alcohol beer helps them achieve their moderation goals.“Beer lovers across the country are turning to low- and no-alcohol beers as their go-to choice to meet moderation goals,” the president and chief executive of the institute, Brian Crawford, said in a release. He adds that brewers are developing innovative and flavorful choices that meet consumer demands.
