Bill Gates Denies Epstein Claims in First Public Address Since Latest Document Release

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is strongly denying allegations detailed in recently released documents involving the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, describing the claims as “false” and reaffirming his regret over their past association.In an interview with Australia’s Nine News airing Wednesday night local time, Mr. Gates spoke publicly for the first time regarding a specific email included in the roughly 3 million pages of files released by the Justice Department last week. The email, written by Epstein in 2013, suggested that Mr. Gates had contracted a sexually transmitted disease and sought to secretly administer antibiotics to his then-wife, Melinda Gates.Addressing the email directly, Mr. Gates said, “Jeffrey wrote an email to himself; that email was never sent.”“The email is, you know, false,” Mr. Gates told Nine News. “So I don’t know what his thinking was there. It just reminds me, you know, every minute I spent with regret, and I, you know, apologize that I did that.”The emergence of the documents comes amid significant changes in the Gates’ philanthropic landscape. While the couple divorced in 2021 after 27 years of marriage, they initially pledged to continue their work together. However, Ms. Gates officially resigned from the Gates Foundation in 2024.In a recent interview with NPR, Ms. Gates expressed that she felt she had “no other choice” regarding her departure. “I had to leave my marriage, I felt I had to eventually leave the foundation, so it’s just sad,” she said.The released documents outline a deterioration in the relationship between Mr. Gates and Epstein. In the 2013 email — which contained several typos — Epstein wrote that he was “dismayed” that Mr. Gates was ending their friendship over an “accident.”“TO add insult to injury you them implore me to please delete the emails mails regarding your std, your request that I provide you antibiotics that you can surreptitiously give to Melinda and the description of your penis,” the email reads.In correspondence from the same year, Epstein accused Mr. Gates of involving him in “morally inappropriate” activities. “From helping Bill to get drugs, in order to deal with consequences of sex with russian girls, to facilitating his illicit trysts, with married women, to being asked to provide adderall fro bridge tournamnts [sic],” the email said.Epstein claimed these conflicts led to his resignation from a role at the Gates Foundation and BG3, a think tank founded by Mr. Gates, citing that he got “caught up in a severe marital dispute between Melinda and Bill.”During the Nine News interview, Mr. Gates was pressed on the nature of his relationship with Epstein.“I regret every minute I spent with him,” Mr. Gates said. “It’s factually true that I was only at dinners. You know, I never went to the island. I never met any women. And so, you know, the more that comes out, the more clear it will be that although the time was a mistake, it had nothing to do with that kind of behavior.”Before Mr. Gates’ denial, Ms. Gates had called on her ex-husband to answer questions regarding the claims. “Whatever questions remain there — I can’t even begin to know all of it — those questions are for those people and for even my ex-husband,” she said on NPR’s “Wild Card” podcast. “They need to answer to those things, not me.”
