FOR THE FLUTE Ralph Samuelson, Elizabeth Brown, Shoji Mizumoto, and Ned Rothenberg perform a program of music for the shakuhachi, a traditional Japanese bamboo flute. The concert features traditional and new compositions for one to four players positioned around the room. MUSIC FROM AFRICA Focus on Africa, a three-day music festival, celebrates historical and contemporary African music. South African composer Bongani Ndodana conducts his own works, performed by soprano Dawn Padmore and the African Exchanges Ensemble (tomorrow, 7 p.m. discussion, 8 p.m. concert, $20). The concert African Exchanges showcases works by nine composers and looks at the musical exchanges among Africa, Europe, and America (Saturday, 8 p.m., $20). RIVERSIDE PERFORMANCE Music director George Rothman will conduct the Riverside Symphony in the second subscription program of the orchestra’s 25th-anniversary season. The concert features a rarely heard piece from the Baroque master Jean-Philippe Rameau and a contemporary work by Marius Constant, who died in 2004. NEW CHORAL TUNES Harold Rosenbaum conducts the New York Virtuoso Singers in a concert featuring recent choral music by John Adams, David Lang, Julia Wolfe, Michael Gordon, Jeffrey Schanzer, and Steve Martland.
