CHERRY ON TOP The Cherry Lane Theatre honors playwrights Edward Albee and David Henry Hwang, theater lawyer John Breglio, and the speaker of the New York City Council, Christine Quinn,at its annual gala. The event, which is held at the newly renovated theater, is hosted by Tony Award-winning actress Judith Ivey. F. Murray Abraham, Robby Benson, Billy Crudup, Karla DeVito, and Dule Hill are among the performers. An auction follows the dinner. REMIND ME AGAIN The new musical “I Love You Because” follows a greeting card writer, played by Colin Hanlon, who must navigate the New York dating scene after his longtime girlfriend cheats on him. The show is billed as “a gender-reversed modern day musical retelling” of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice.” Ryan Cunningham wrote the book and lyrics, and Joshua Salzman wrote the music. Daniel Kutner directs. Through Saturday, tonight, tomorrow, Thursday, and Friday, 8 p.m., Saturday, 7 and 10 p.m., Village Theatre, 158 Bleecker St., between Thompson and Sullivan streets, 212-307-4100, $20-$65.


DEMON STORY An off-Broadway adaptation of “The Screwtape Letters” puts C.S. Lewis’s demon Screwtape and his protege onstage. The story follows Screwtape as he advises his young charge how to undermine faith and “prevent the formation of virtues” in the lives of Christian converts. Jeffrey Fiske directs the Fellowship for the Performing Arts production.
