Cambridge University Professor Jason Arday Caught Plagiarizing — and Uses AI To Submit His Resignation

The ignominious ending of a Cambridge University professor who resigned Wednesday after it was disclosed that he lied about publishing a book, among other incredulities, was punctuated by a resignation letter that appears to have been written by artificial intelligence.An online commentator, Hunter Ash, ran the resignation letter of Mr. Arday through an AI detection model, which declared it 100 percent artificial. Mr. Ash declared that Mr. Arday “has resigned… with a 100% AI-generated letter. Incredible.”Mr. Arday, celebrated as a black, autistic, dyslexic overachiever who became the youngest black professor at Cambridge University, announced his resignation on Wednesday, saying that he needed to step back after unrelenting public scrutiny and attacks on his character. In his resignation letter, he wrote that “While criticism is an inevitable part of academic life, what I have experienced has gone far beyond scholarly disagreement.”The toll on Mr. Arday’s psyche and the personal cost to him had allegedly become too great. “I have tried to continue because I believe deeply in the values of higher education, in rigorous scholarship, and in the transformative power of universities. I have tried because of my students, my colleagues and the countless people who have written to tell me that my journey gave them hope,” he wrote.Mr. Arday added that he needed to be present for his family and that he was aiming to “reclaim some peace, some privacy and some semblance of an ordinary life” out of the limelight of “public examination and judgement.”Mr. Arday writes that he has “concluded that the only way to bring this chapter to an end is to step away,” in the letter published by the British-based Good Law Project, which was founded during Brexit negotiations to employ legal action, investigations, and campaigns “to fight against hate and spread hope.”The scrutiny described in the resignation letter, determined to be 83 percent artificial according to The New York Sun’s pass of the message through an AI detection monitor used by professors, textguard.ai, did not begin recently. Questions about Mr. Arday’s integrity date as far back as 2023, the start of his tenure at Cambridge, when another professor questioned Mr. Arday about some of his academic conclusions, inconsistencies, and similarities to other writers on the topic of critical race theory for which Mr. Arday was renowned.At the time, a professor emeritus at Plymouth Marjon University at Devon, England, David Harris, challenged Mr. Arday in an email, politely asking for an opportunity to discuss the matter. Mr. Harris, who had previously been scolded by his university for questioning the intellectual traditions of Critical Law, Black Studies, and Marxist and Frankfurt Schools of Thought found in many curricula, received as a response from Mr. Arday a threat of prosecution for harassment.That imbroglio resulted in police at Devon and Cornwall investigating Mr. Harris. Though the authorities decided against filing charges, the case raised concerns at Britain’s Committee for Academic Freedom, which issued a statement over the use of law enforcement to suppress scholarly scrutiny.“Any tendency to reach for the criminal law when confronted with academic criticism must be checked before it becomes, if not normalised, then at least an attractive means of avoiding difficult but legitimate questions,” wrote a researcher for the Committee for Academic Freedom, Frederick Attenborough, after Mr. Arday’s resignation.A former Cambridge academic, Nathan Cofnas, asserted that Mr. Arday had lifted more than 100 passages in his dissertation from a Brunel University student thesis written six years before his. The discovery was made by Mr. Cofnas after ran Mr. Arday’s thesis through AI detection software.Since then, other questions have surfaced about Mr. Arday’s credibility. Mr. Arday had claimed he had run 600 miles in six days and run 30 marathons in 35 days to raise 5 million pounds for charity, numbers that seemed improbable. Asked by the Guardian about the achievements, he partially walked back those claims. Then, universities where he had claimed to be a visiting professor denied that he had been more than an adjunct. Nor could they account for his publication record, central to credentialing by universities. The response from Cambridge throughout the investigations has been steadfast support of the professor — until Wednesday, after the Telegraph reported that it had determined that the book Mr. Arday had claimed to have written and used on his curriculum vitae with the university, “Being Young, Black and Male: Challenging the Dominant Discourse,” was never published.On Wednesday, Jesus College at the University of Cambridge, where Mr. Arday was a fellow, told the Telegraph that it is now investigating. Upon learning of the resignation, the Free Speech Union, which also had defended Mr. Harris, said every day new information was emerging to puncture Mr. Arday’s academic claims.“It looks like the truth has finally caught up with the University of Cambridge’s ‘academic superstar’, Professor Jason Arday,” the union wrote in a post on X. Mr. Cofnas posted “Game over. Now I’d like to hear from the @Cambridge_Uni administrators who said this was a ‘vile campaign’ against a ‘world-class scholar.'”
