Cesar Chavez Events Canceled as Organizations Respond to Sexual Abuse Allegations

Organizers across several states have canceled or renamed events honoring labor leader Cesar Chavez after the United Farm Workers and the Cesar Chavez Foundation disclosed allegations that Chavez engaged in sexual misconduct involving women and minors.The decision affects annual celebrations tied to Cesar Chavez Day, observed on March 31, which marks Chavez’s birthday. Events in California, Arizona, Texas, and Michigan have reportedly been called off or revised as groups reassess how to commemorate his legacy in light of the claims.The allegations themselves have not yet been publicly detailed in full, and news organizations have reported that they have not independently reviewed the underlying claims or spoken with alleged victims. Even so, the response from the organizations most closely tied to Chavez signals a significant shift in how public institutions and advocacy groups may approach his legacy going forward.In a public statement, the Cesar Chavez Foundation said it was “deeply shocked and saddened” by the allegations, which it said are expected to be detailed more fully in the coming weeks.“We have become aware of disturbing allegations that Cesar Chavez engaged in inappropriate sexual behavior with women and minors during his time as President of the United Farm Workers of America,” the foundation said in its statement.“The Foundation is working with leaders in the Farmworker Movement to be responsive to these allegations, support the people who may have been harmed by his actions, and ensure we are united and guided by our commitment to justice and community empowerment,” the foundation said.The United Farm Workers, the union Chavez co-founded in the 1960s, said it would not participate in this year’s Chavez Day activities. The organization said the reported conduct, if true, would conflict with its values.“The UFW has learned of deeply troubling allegations that one of the union’s co-founders, Cesar Chavez, behaved in ways that are incompatible with our organization’s values. Some of the reports are family issues, and not our story to tell or our place to comment on. Far more troubling are allegations involving abuse of young women or minors,” the UFW said in a statement.The union added that it had not independently confirmed the allegations. “We have not received any direct reports, and we do not have any firsthand knowledge of these allegations,” the UFW said in the statement.According to the organizations, a confidential channel is being established for people who want to share harmful experiences, along with a process aimed at determining accountability measures. Rather than taking part in this year’s commemorative events, the UFW said it is encouraging supporters to attend immigration justice events and acts of service for farmworkers.Local officials have also responded. Tucson Mayor Regina Romero said she was “personally devastated” by the allegations regarding Chavez. “Moving forward, we will consider the input of the community on how to address the name of the holiday while continuing to honor workers and acknowledging the work that still needs to be done,” Ms. Romero said.In San Antonio, the César E. Chávez Legacy & Educational Foundation will not hold an event there this year. Lansing, Michigan, and several Texas cities, including Corpus Christi and Houston, have also reportedly canceled planned observances. In Arizona, officials indicated the state would not recognize the commemorative holiday this year.The allegations have cast new scrutiny on one of the most prominent figures in the history of the U.S. labor movement. Chavez, born in 1927 near Yuma, Arizona, rose to national prominence as an organizer for farmworkers and helped found the National Farm Workers Association in 1962 alongside Dolores Huerta and Larry Itliong. That organization later became the United Farm Workers of America.Chavez became known for leading nonviolent strikes, boycotts, and fasts in support of better wages, safer working conditions, and more humane treatment for agricultural laborers. His campaigns helped elevate farmworker rights into a national civil rights issue, especially in California.Over the decades, Chavez was widely honored by public officials, labor groups, and community organizations. Schools, roads, parks, and community centers across the country were named after him. California established a state holiday in his honor in 1995, and in 2014 President Barack Obama proclaimed March 31 as Cesar Chavez Day. A naval vessel was also named for Chavez, who served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1948.Mr. Obama praised Chavez at the dedication of the Cesar Chavez National Monument in 2012, saying: “I want [visitors] to learn about a small man guided by enormous faith — in a righteous cause, a loving God, the dignity of every human being.”President Biden also displayed a bust of Chavez in the Oval Office.
