Congressman Max Miller, Accused of Abuse by Ex-Wife, Unseals Dozens of Records He Says Prove His Innocence

A Republican lawmaker from Ohio, Congressman Max Miller, is releasing dozens of records that he says prove he never harmed his ex-wife or his daughter, as his former spouse, Emily Moreno, claims. Ms. Moreno is the daughter of Senator Bernie Moreno, a Republican from Ohio who says his former son-in-law should not be serving in elected office and should instead seek professional psychological help. Mr. Miller was first elected to Congress in 2022 after serving as an aide to President Trump during his first term in the White House. He became engaged to Ms. Moreno in 2021 and the two were later married the following year. Mr. Miller filed for divorce in 2024. Last week, Mr. Miller was accused in court filings of abusing both Ms. Moreno and their daughter, leading Ms. Moreno to seek a restraining order from a local judge. In a 15-minute-long livestream on X Sunday morning, Mr. Miller spoke directly to camera to announce he would not end his re-election campaign. Instead, he says it is incumbent upon reporters to look into the records he is making public.“I’m speaking up as a father, trying to protect our daughter,” Mr. Miller said in the video, arguing that “the left-wing media already has a narrative.” “I have never abused our daughter. Every one of these allegations traces back to a single source: my former wife,” he continued. “Ask yourself: What is continuing to change? … What changed, ladies and gentlemen, were the stakes.”“Not one of these allegations has ever been substantiated by any court or any agency,” he added. In the documents made public, multiple records show that local police and child protective services did investigate allegations of abuse, though no evidence found that Mr. Miller had harmed his ex-wife or daughter. “My former wife is engaging in a pattern of reporting incredibly serious and destructive allegations with absolutely no evidence,” Mr. Miller said. “Every single one of these allegations were already investigated.” Mr. Miller was previously accused of physical abuse by a former girlfriend, Stephanie Grisham, who served as White House press secretary during Mr. Trump’s first term. Mr. Miller has denied those accusations as well. In a statement shortly after Mr. Miller ended his livestream, a spokesman for Ms. Moreno, Stefan Mychajliw, wrote on X that the congressmen had gone on a “bizarre and lie-filled rant” in an attempt to save his political career. “No loving parent would have ever used their daughter as a PR pawn to save their own political career. Miller can lie and spin on X, but he cannot do so under oath in a court of law. We are confident that justice will prevail in court,” Mr. Mychajliw wrote. Mr. Miller released correspondence between himself and Ms. Moreno that he says exculpates him from his ex-wife’s accusations, including an email thread where the two discussed a mark on their daughter’s neck that her mother had discovered shortly after she had left her father’s custody. In that thread, Ms. Moreno asks her ex-husband if he knew anything about the mark to which he said it must have been from the paint that their daughter had been using earlier that day. Ms. Moreno later took their daughter to a doctor who then removed the red mark with an “alcohol wipe,” leading Ms. Moreno to tell her ex-husband in an email that all was well. Mr. Miller included videos from his Ring doorbell camera footage that shows Ms. Moreno at his home on the day that she claims that he had physically abused her. In one, Ms. Moreno is seen leaving Mr. Miller’s home in a cheery mood with the daughter in her arms. Mr. Miller said that his ex-wife invited him and his girlfriend to the playground with their daughter just days later, and offered to cook dinner for him at home. He says her actions are a clear sign that he had not harmed his wife. “If these accusations were true, I would be in jail,” he said. “My former wife would not have been offering to cook me dinner and inviting me to playgrounds. Think about that. And I certainly would not have joint custody of my daughter.”Mr. Miller is seeking a third term to represent his district, which covers the area south of Cleveland. He won his 2024 race with just 51 percent of the vote, though he easily prevailed over the Democratic candidate thanks to the presence of an independent who took nearly 13 percent of the vote. Democrats are hoping to unseat Mr. Miller this fall, and his opponent, Brian Poinxdexter, already seeking to raise money by highlighting the allegations against Mr. Miller. “I’m not getting out of this race,” Mr. Miller said Sunday. “I’m winning in November.”Shortly after Mr. Miller made his statement, his former father-in-law, Mr. Moreno, said Mr. Miller ought to step back from public life and seek professional mental health treatment. Mr. Moreno has up until this point remained mum on the ugly divorce fight between his daughter and his fellow Republican member of Congress. “Out of concern for the safety of my family, I hoped to keep this matter private but Max Miller’s increasingly erratic and dangerous behavior has made that impossible,” Mr. Moreno wrote on X Sunday. “As he has admitted privately, Max Miller needs serious psychological help. He is a danger to my daughter, and I hold my breath every minute he has custody of my granddaughter.”“If there are any basic standards of character required to hold elected office, Max Miller fails them. He should not serve in the House of Representatives,” Mr. Moreno said. Mr. Miller, in his video statement, similarly accused his ex-wife of suffering from “significant mental health challenges” during the course of their marriage and in the years since they have separated. “I’m not raising that to embarrass her or attack her,” Mr. Miller said. “This is medically diagnosed … I do believe those struggles have contributed to allegations that I firmly dispute.”
