Conservative Fans Warn MLB Over Admonishing Players Who Donned Bible Verses on ‘Pride Night’

Major League Baseball is facing criticism from conservative fans for issuing a verbal warning to three San Francisco Giants pitchers who added Bible verses to their hats on “Pride Night” at homefield.On June 12, pitchers Landen Roupp, JT Brubaker, and Ryan Walker wrote “Gen. 9:12-16” on their hats. That refers to the passage in the Bible’s Noah story where God says that the rainbow is a symbol of his covenant with humanity. Mr. Roupp told reporters after the game that the verse is “just about God’s covenant and a promise that he makes to us.” He added, “I’m thankful we live in a country where, you know, we have the freedom to believe what we want.”The decision to modify their hats on a designated “Pride Night” frustrated viewers. On Monday, MLB said in a statement that it had admonished the trio for distinguishing their uniforms from everyone else’s attire. The entire team’s hats were altered for the evening by emblazoning the team’s logo in rainbow colors rather than its regular orange. The chief communications officer for MLB, Pat Courtney, told Outsports, “The writing on the cap violates our rules and consistent with normal practice we have warned the players about future violations.” The Giants also put out a statement apologizing for the “choices by individual players [that] have caused pain and anger to many in the LGBTQ+ community.”The Athletic, which is owned by the New York Times, published a column criticizing the move. “By choosing this verse as a response to the rainbow colors of the pride hat, the message appeared to be: Don’t forget what the rainbow is really about,” said author Grant Brisbee. Mr. Brisbee argued that it was “tone-deaf” and turned what could have been a “moment for community unity” into a “night about ‘us versus them.’”The San Francisco Chronicle also published a column in which it accused the players of defacing their official uniform and “hijacking the event for their own purposes.”However, conservatives expressed outrage that Major League Baseball would warn players about donning biblical verses while also requiring them to conform to the Pride-themed hats. Senator Katie Britt wrote on X, “Let me get this straight, @MLB teams can host ‘pride night’ but players wearing bible verses is an issue?”“Last I checked, freedom of religion was still one of the founding principles of our nation and enshrined in our constitution,” she said. “This decision should be reversed now.”Senator Josh Hawley wrote on X, “‘Warned’ them? For what? Quoting the Bible? That’s now an employment offense? You’ve got to be kidding me. God bless these players. MLB has some explaining to do.”“There’s a lot more us fans that agree with the pitchers than with the league when it comes to pride night propaganda,” said a spokesman for Turning Point USA, Andrew Kolvet. “Let the MLB be warned, not the pitchers. Be careful, MLB.” Speaking to the pitchers’ adding the biblical messages, an activist who seeks to root out corporate diversity, equity, and inclusion policies, Robby Starbuck, wrote on X, “Every Christian player should do it in protest and Christians should boycott MLB.”However, not everyone agrees that the solution to expressing personal beliefs is more freedom on the ballfield. A conservative attorney, Casey Mattox, noted that the MLB is a private employer that can make decisions about team uniforms. However, he questioned why people are “so invested in wanting to see a private employer punish someone for speech you don’t like that doesn’t actually affect you in any way.”“The clear solution here is just wear normal uniforms and stop pride nights. It’s counterproductive at this point,” added the founder of Outkick, Clay Travis.On Tuesday, the MLB released a statement saying the league respects “players’ right to free expression.” However, “Writing of any kind, with any message, is prohibited per Major League Baseball’s Uniform Regulations.” “To be clear, this routine verbal warning not to wear the hat in future games is not disciplinary and had absolutely nothing to do with the content of the message,” it added. The statement noted that MLB has “given the same warning numerous times in the past” to players for writing messages celebrating Mother’s Day.In 2025, a player for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Clayton Kershaw, put the same verses on his hat on a “Pride Night.” Neither he nor the Dodgers issued any public statements about a warning or disciplinary action in connection with the display. MLB did not respond to the Sun’s request for comment by the time of publication.
