Democrats’ Socialist Surge Sets Up a Dilemma for Hakeem Jeffries

The Democratic House leader, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, is going to face a huge dilemma after the 2026 election. Will he legitimize the Democratic Socialists of America, many of whom beat the incumbents he endorsed, or will he block them from committee seats and power in the House?If Mr. Jeffries decides to legitimize the radicals, he will put every Democratic candidate in the country on the line. Are these candidates comfortable voting to give power to people who oppose America in its current form — and who want to fundamentally replace the current system with a radically different system?There is a simple question every Republican candidate should ask of his or her Democratic opponent: “Are you going to give power to those who want to eliminate the police and prisons, open the borders to all who want to America, and replace our constitutional government with a different system?”To organize the next House, there will have to be a Democratic slate and a Republican slate. How will the establishment Democrats vote if their slate is filled with extremists who regard them “corporate Democrats” who should be replaced? Further, the Democratic Socialists of America are winning seats in the Congress as well as in state legislatures and local governments. The old guard Democrats are losing ground every day. Will they accept their eventual demise and go with the party or resist?Any doubts about Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s influence were erased in the New York Democratic primaries this week. Every time the choice was between Mr. Mamdani’s candidate and Mr. Jeffries’s candidate, the mayor’s candidate won.The 34-year-old Mr. Mamdani is the natural successor to the 84-year-old senator of Vermont, Bernie Sanders. More than a half-century of Mr. Sanders’ work is paying off as a new, more radical generation of socialists is taking over the party which almost nominated him for president. In many ways the party of President Obama is becoming the party of Mr. Mamdani.The challenge for Mr. Jeffries and other Democrats is that these far-left socialists want to replace them as well as Republicans.AvDemocratic activist and CNN analyst, Van Jones, captured the moment when he said, “this is a battle between the establishment and this insurgency, and the roof is collapsing on the Democratic Party establishment tonight.”Make no mistake. The insurgent winners are truly radical. The Democratic Socialists of America would rather celebrate the upcoming 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence as our nation’s funeral rather than its birthday. They would rather invent a new country that they define.Consider Mr. Mamdani’s candidate in New York’s 7th Congressional District, Claire Valdez. She wants to abolish ICE, legalize millions of illegal immigrants, and provide government healthcare for every American. She supports “Queer and Trans Liberation” (whatever that means). Ms. Valdez is a genuine radical who has been arrested repeatedly in demonstrations outside the office of the Democratic Senate leader, Chuck Schumer, and other areas. Despite Mr. Jeffries’ endorsement, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus chairman, Representative Adriano Espaillat, was defeated by the Mamdani-endorsed candidate, Darializa Avila Chevalier, in the primary for New York’s 13th District. She, too, is a genuine radical. In an interview with Vox, Ms. Chevalier said all deportations are wrong. In 2021, she tweeted “A world without borders — just like a world without prisons or police — is possible, necessary, and the only moral way forward.” Like a true hard-line socialist Ms. Chevalier tweeted “seize the means of production.” To top it off, Ms. Chevalier boasted about wiping her hands on an American flag at an event, because she didn’t have a napkin.This week’s primary elections should be more than adequate proof that the Democratic Socialists of America are real, well-funded, and serious about profoundly changing America. Representative Tom Suozzi captured this reality when he told Axios, “People who do not support the DSA wring their hands at cocktail parties, while the DSA is organizing.”The dilemma for Mr. Jeffries is whether he is going to welcome or work against his party’s demise.
