Doctors Without Borders Employed a Hamas Commander

Doctors Without Borders admitted to The New York Sun that a photograph showing a Hamas battalion commander wearing the organization’s uniform was likely of a man it had employed in Gaza.Hamas published an obituary video on October 18 showing Ahmad Dawood Abu Mohsen in different sets of combat gear, training inside Gaza with several weapons, including an AK-47. The obituary states that Mohsen, who was a deputy commander in Hamas’ Tel al-Sultan Battalion in Rafah, was born on 22 December 1996 and killed in Gaza on 22 March 2025. The following day, Mohsen was mourned in a Facebook post as a martyr alongside a picture of him in a Doctors Without Borders uniform. The Sun has independently verified the Hamas obituary and the Facebook post showing Mohsen in a Doctors Without Borders uniform. Mohsen’s Facebook page also has a post from October 2024 when he said “we are all proud” to live in the Tel al-Sultan area. Hamas obituary for Ahmad Dawood Abu Mohsen. When asked about the Hamas video as well as the photo of Mohsen wearing their uniform, Doctors Without Borders “confirmed with local staff that it appears to be him.”“We understand that an individual named Ahmad Dawood Abu Mohsen was employed as a daily worker by Doctors Without Borders,” the organization said. “Doctors Without Borders has had no indication that Ahmad Dawood Abu Mohsen might have been involved in military activity of any kind. “Doctors Without Borders would never knowingly employ anyone involved in military activities, which contradicts our core values and ethics. Any employee who engages in military activity would pose a danger to our staff and patients.” The Sun presented the IDF with documentation of Mohsen’s role in both Doctors Without Borders and Hamas to which they replied: “Numerous Hamas terrorists have been involved with Doctors Without Borders, as has been demonstrated in the past. The Hamas terrorist organization continues to systematically exploit the civilian population and operate under the guise of medical personnel, in violation of international law and in a manner that endangers uninvolved civilians.”The issue of Mohsen’s dual role was first raised by Salo Aizenberg, an independent scholar who is also a board member of Honest Reporting. In June 2024, Doctors Without Borders condemned Israel for targeting its employee, Fadi Al-Wadiya, in a strike while on his way to work at one of their clinics in Gaza City.“Israeli forces accused Al-Wadiya of being a ‘significant operative of the Islamic Jihad armed group,” Doctors Without Borders said at the time. “However, Doctors Without Borders has no indication that this is true and has received no direct communication from Israeli authorities about this accusation.” But in February this year, Islamic Jihad posted an obituary of Al-Wadiya, matching the IDF’s claim he was indeed an operative. Doctors Without Borders issued a statement, saying the organization “had no indication that Fadi Al Wadiya might have been involved in military activity of any kind prior to his killing by the Israeli Forces.” “If the Israeli authorities had any reliable information about Fadi’s involvement in military activity, they never shared it with Doctors Without Borders either prior to his killing or when we reached out immediately after he was killed to ask for clarifications around the circumstances of his death.” Israel has been harshly condemned in the international community for attacking health clinics and targeting journalists and aid workers. But in recent months, Hamas has posted numerous obituaries revealing identities of combatants who have later been found to pose as journalists, nurses and aid workers. The Committee to Protect Journalists has been forced to remove dozens of names from their list of killed journalists after finding they engaged in combat or didn’t meet the criteria for who they consider to be a journalist.
