‘Voucher Scheme’

It seems that while officials of the Washington Teachers’ Union are busy opposing congressional plans to institute school choice in the District, they have come up with their own version of vouchers. Mike Antonucci, who publishes the Education Intelligence Agency Communique, lays out the situation under the headline, “Voucher Scheme.” The ongoing union corruption scandal in the nation’s capital has yielded a second guilty plea: Michael Martin, the sonin-law of an assistant to the former union president, Barbara Bullock. Martin pleaded guilty Friday to setting up a fake firm, allegedly at the behest of Ms. Bullock, that netted hundreds of thousands of dollars in stolen union dues.
On top of limousine service and tickets to Washington Redskins games, Martin and his wife also used some of the money for “tuition for their children at a private school,” according to his confession. To quote Mr. Antonucci, “While Bullock was spending dues money to keep vouchers out of the hands of the district’s poorest residents, she was also using dues money to provide a ‘school voucher’ for Martin’s children.” No one blames Mr. Martin for wanting to be able to choose the best education for his children. What the school-choice movement wants is for ordinary, tax-paying parents to have the same ability to make their best-reasoned choice for their own children, without breaking the law.
