Explosive Diarrhea Outbreak Linked to Taco Bell Lettuce

Shredded lettuce used at Taco Bell restaurants has been linked to a widespread parasitic outbreak that has caused more than 1,600 people to suffer from explosive diarrhea and vomiting, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.On Friday afternoon, the California-based company that supplied the lettuce, Taylor Farms, announced that its Mexican subsidiary was voluntarily removing all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the American market.“We are committed to doing everything in our power to address this issue, support the ongoing investigation, and help restore trust,” the company said in a news release.The outbreak of cyclosporiasis occurring in five states — Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. Several other states are also reporting cases but federal authorities say they are unrelated to the Taco Bell outbreak.Cyclosporiasis is not usually life-threatening and is usually treated with antibiotics. Some people, however, some people, however, can become very ill and require hospitalization, according to the CDC.More than 30 states have reported infections this year, and current data shows the number of infections surpassing the record of about 4,700 cases set in 2019. The CDC did not issue a wider recall of any lettuce as part of the announcement.Taco Bell announced on Thursday that it was voluntarily removing lettuce from an unnamed supplier “indefinitely” in some states after working with public health officials.“While no official advisory has been issued, we believe public health is a shared responsibility among restaurants, their suppliers, and authorities, and we are proud to have consistently acted quickly and proactively to protect our guests,” the fast-food company said in a release.“Taco Bell has taken precautionary action, and we encourage all relevant restaurants, retailers, and foodservice operators to do the same,” the statement continued.Taylor Farms said its salads and kits sold in grocery stores do not contain iceberg lettuce and are not associated with the outbreak.
