Latest Release of Epstein Files Details Ties to Tech Titans and Top Officials but Fails To Satisfy Critics

The Justice Department’s latest — and presumably final — dump of documents related to the convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein case contains new details about the late financier’s connections to some of the world’s most powerful figures in technology, politics, and business but has failed to silence critics who suspect there is still more to learn. The Department of Justice released 3.5 million pages of documents on Friday, including communications and flight logs that shed light on Epstein’s relationships with tech moguls such as Bill Gates, Elon Musk, and Sergey Brin. The release, authorized by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, comes amid intense scrutiny and legislative pressure to bring transparency to Epstein’s network of associates years after his death in a Manhattan jail cell. Mr. Blanche said the release “marks the end of a very comprehensive document identification and review process,” indicating that no further releases are expected. He said that about 2.5 million out of some 6 million potentially responsive files will not be released to protect the identify of victims or because they containchild sexual abuse material.Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is among the high-profile figures named in the newly released emails. Communications from 2012 indicate that Mr. Lutnick visited Epstein’s private island in the U.S. Virgin Islands, called “Little St. James” but notoriously nicknamed “Pedophile Island.” The emails suggest Mr. Lutnick visited with his family and friends, including eight children, implying a social rather than illicit nature to the trip. Mr. Lutnick, who has previously said he cut ties with Epstein around 2005, told The New York Times on Friday, “I spent zero time with him.”Despite the volume of the release, critics argue the Justice Department has fallen short of full transparency. Congressman Robert Garcia, California Democrat and ranking member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, sharply criticized the release for being incomplete.“Donald Trump and his Department of Justice have now made it clear that they intend to withhold roughly 50% of the Epstein files, while claiming to have fully complied with the law. This is outrageous and incredibly concerning,” Mr. Garcia said in a statement. “We are demanding the names of Epstein’s co-conspirators and the men and pedophiles who abused women and girls.”The documents provide a detailed look at Epstein’s attempts to cultivate relationships with Silicon Valley’s elite.Bill GatesPerhaps the most explosive allegations in the files concern Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates. In emails that appear to be drafts of a letter, Epstein claimed Mr. Gates had an affair with a Russian woman and alleged that he helped Mr. Gates obtain “drugs” and “antibiotics” to conceal a sexually transmitted disease from his then-wife, Melinda.Epstein expressed frustration that Mr. Gates had cut off their friendship, writing he was “dismayed beyond comprehension.” A spokesman for Mr. Gates vehemently denied the claims, saying, “The only thing these documents demonstrate is Epstein’s frustration that he did not have an ongoing relationship with Gates and the lengths he would go to entrap and defame,” the BBC reported.Elon MuskThe files disclose that Elon Musk and Epstein exchanged multiple emails between 2012 and 2014 regarding potential meetups. In one 2012 exchange, Epstein invited Mr. Musk to “come visit me on my island,” to which Mr. Musk replied, “Sounds good, will try to make it.” Later emails show Mr. Musk asked, “What day/night will be the wildest party on your island?” While Mr. Musk has previously denied visiting the island, the documents show the two men coordinating schedules, including a lunch and tour at SpaceX headquarters in 2013.Sergey BrinGoogle co-founder Sergey Brin is also featured in the documents. Emails show Mr. Brin corresponding with Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s convicted co-conspirator, and making plans to dine at Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse in 2003. One victim told investigators she met Mr. Brin on Epstein’s private island in 2007.The reach of Epstein’s network extended beyond the U.S. tech sector.Richard BransonEmails from 2013 show the Virgin Group founder maintaining a friendly rapport with Epstein. In one message, Mr. Branson wrote, “Any time you’re in the area would love to see you. As long as you bring your harem!” A representative for Mr. Branson said the “harem” comment referred to three adult women Epstein brought to a business meeting and that Mr. Branson had limited contact with him, Sky News reported.Prince AndrewThe files include an email exchange where Epstein appears to offer to introduce “The Duke” to a “beautiful” 26-year-old Russian woman. The response, signed “A,” seemingly invites Epstein to Buckingham Palace, promising “lots of privacy.” The disgraced ex-Duke was also pictured crouching over a woman lying on the floor in a series of creepy photos.Steve BannonA brief exchange from 2019 indicates that Epstein gifted former Trump strategist Steve Bannon an Apple Watch.Mr. Blanche noted that while the files contain various allegations involving high-profile figures, including President Trump, the complaints found in FBI tips remain uncorroborated. Mr. Blanche emphasized to Fox News that “in none of these communications … did Epstein suggest President Trump had done anything criminal.”Congressman Garcia vowed to continue the investigation, saying, “Our work and investigation are just getting started.”
