Flotilla Rocked by Allegations Leader Had Sexual Relations With Multiple Volunteers on Boats Headed to Gaza

As another flotilla of boats full of pro-Palestinian activists is seeking to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza, the group that organizes the missions is being rocked by allegations that one of its leaders has had sex with multiple volunteers during “humanitarian mission[s],” but that the group declined to take action against the individual. Thirty-nine boats carrying medical aid were originally set to depart from Barcelona on Sunday. The trip was delayed due to stormy weather, which led to them sailing to another port. However, the leadership of the flotilla is facing another storm as some volunteers are accusing the governing body of the group that organizes the missions, the Global Sumud Flotilla, of covering up misconduct and abuse.In a post on Instagram, a Palestinian activist page, Heart of Falastin, accused a “senior leader with the flotilla” of sexual misconduct.“A member of the Steering Committee, the highest governing body of the organization — code-named B.L. for their protection (nor ours), engaged in sexual relations with multiple activists while on the boat heading towards Gaza,” the post said. “Not one person. Not two. Three different individuals. All volunteers on a humanitarian mission.”The post added that the account does not “care what anyone does in their private time. At a hotel. In their own home. Have sex with whoever you want. That is not our concern.”Rather, the issue was that the leader allegedly had sex on the boat “while heading to a nation undergoing genocide with volunteers who are under your authority, in a space where activists are sleeping, eating, and working together.”Heart of Falastin called the behavior an “abuse of power” and said it created a “toxic environment” that “compromises the integrity of the entire mission.”“When it happens on a boat heading to Gaza — a space that should be sacred, focused, and disciplined — it is a red line,” the post added. The post accused the steering committee of having knowledge of the allegations but declining to investigate or comment on them. It also says that B.L. is still on the committee. The complaint also says that the steering committee “threatened” people who “dared to speak.”According to the post, the “first incident” took place over six months ago. It was unclear how many more such incidents allegedly occurred, but the post promised there would be more stories. In another post, Heart of Falastin accused the Steering Committee of verbal abuse.“Abuse has been normalized to the point where their own staff defends it,” the post said. According to the account, a member of the leadership, L.F., said that the leadership “shouts at everyone. That’s okay. They don’t mean it. Take it with an open heart.”While L.F. allegedly insists it is “okay” to shout at “everyone,” the post argued that “those who are shouted at and broken down inside the organization will eventually turn that same abuse outward. And we have seen where it lands. On us. Palestinians where they insulted us.”Heart of Falastin is promising to post more “testimonies,” including allegations of “financial theft” and the “silencing of Palestinian voices.”The GSF told the Sun that it is “fundamentally opposed to the abuse of power” and believes “the integrity of our movement must match the justice of our cause, which is why we refuse impunity in our own spaces.”It added that it created an “arms-length, independent Ethics Committee” made up of “trained legal professionals” to “ensure that leadership and power do not influence our accountability processes.”However, GSF said it cannot “trigger an investigation or hold individuals accountable based on public rumors.” It also said that it “encouraged the author of the Hearts of Falastin post to use the confidential, protected reporting pathway so that a rigorous, impartial review can take place.” Though it said it had “not received any related complaints” via the “reporting pathway.”
