If traditional ice cream is your passion, you’ve got another chance to indulge. For the first time, La Salle Ice Cream – which has sold its treats through supermarkets and bodegas since 1972 – has opened its own retail shop.

In the first month, the foot traffic has already been heavy, according to owner Medhat Mohamed. “We’ve doubled business every week,” he said. La Salle offers 12 sorbet and 18 ice cream flavors, including Mr. Mohamed’s favorite: coconut almond fudge. “Two teaspoons before bed and you’re guaranteed sweet dreams,” he said.

Located on a busy strip of Murray Hill, the shop is a vision in orange and silver. The shiny, busy interior is the sort of place that makes you feel unself-conscious about popping in for a few scoops by yourself. And the room is presided over by the beaming Mr. Mohamed, who began working for the company as a salesman in 1987 and bought the trademark six years later. He plans to open three more La Salle franchises, in Harlem, the Upper West Side, and Greenwich Village within the next year.

In addition to its rich ice cream, La Salle also offers fat-free and sugar-free versions, as well as fat-free yogurt. One scoop will set you back $2.29, two scoops $3.29, and three scoops $4.29. La Salle also sells a wide array of coffees, sundaes, floats, pastries (scones, muffins, and cupcakes), and cakes. Ice cream cakes are available by special order.
