Former UK Ambassador Peter Mandelson Arrested on Suspicion of Misconduct as Part of Epstein Probe

A former British ambassador to America, Peter Mandelson, has been arrested in the United Kingdom on suspicion of misconduct in public office stemming from his communications with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.The Metropolitan Police said Monday that officers “have arrested a 72-year-old man on suspicion of misconduct in public office. He was arrested at an address in Camden on Monday, February 23, and has been taken to a London police station for interview.”Mr. Mandelson was fired from his post in September after the Department of Justice released a cache of emails showing the British diplomat had maintained contact with Epstein even after Epstein’s 2008 conviction on child sex offenses.Police opened a criminal probe into Mr. Mandelson after documents in the released files suggested he shared sensitive government information with Epstein in 2009, when he served as Business Secretary under then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown.In one email, Mr. Mandelson appeared to have forwarded Epstein an internal government report outlining options for the United Kingdom to raise funds in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis. Another seemed to show Mr. Mandelson agreeing to lobby government officials on Epstein’s behalf to reduce taxes on bankers’ bonuses.Mr. Mandelson has not commented on the investigation, but has previously expressed regret over his continued association with Epstein. In February, he resigned from the Labour Party, saying he wanted to spare the coalition “further embarrassment.”His arrest comes just days after the former British prince, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, was arrested on suspicion of a similar offense. Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor’s detention marked the first time in nearly four centuries that a senior British royal had been placed under arrest. He was later released “under investigation.”
