Harboring a Lingering Grudge, Trump Calls Immigrants From Norway Unwelcome in America

President Trump is rolling up the welcome mat to immigrants from Norway, telling them that they’re not welcome during remarks that demonstrate he’s not yet over his monthslong feud with the Nobel committee that passed him over for the Peace Prize.Speaking at a rally in Port Huron, Michigan, on Sunday, the president said he is happy to open America’s doors to immigrants from certain nations, but “I don’t want anybody from Norway. I don’t want anything to do with Norway.” “I settled eight wars and two more coming,” Mr. Trump told the crowd, explaining why he thinks he deserves the Nobel prize. “Frankly, Norway sucks. Norway has become a sh–house country, actually,” he added, reviving the term he has used to describe other countries such as Haiti, Libya, Somalia, and Yemen. The remarks came after the president the day before tore into Somalis and other “migrants from terror-infested countries. “Why can’t we take people from like, well, Norway, Sweden?” he asked before changing his tune about the Scandinavian nation.Despite the threat, the administration has provided no indication it has plans to formalize any new immigration policy targeting Norwegian nationals. Mr. Trump has repeatedly accused the Oslo-based Nobel committee of bias. By Friday, the enduring grievance had hardened into something sharper. At a separate rally in Syracuse, New York, Mr. Trump told supporters, “The United States of America, represented by me as your president, should have received the Nobel Peace Prize, but didn’t. And this is an indelible stain on the country of Norway, and those people that made such a disgraceful and embarrassing decision.”He then went further, accusing the committee of being compromised: “The Nobel Peace Prize has been forever discredited by a handful of radical ideologues who are anti-democracy and really enemies of civilization. We will not forget, Norway, that you didn’t give this prize.”This year’s prize went to the South African former United Nations human rights chief, Navi Pillay, who led the commission that found Israel guilty of genocide in Gaza. Mr. Trump dismissed her as “a liberal person who works at the United Nations, who nobody has ever heard of.” Ms. Pillay, learning of the backlash, joked to colleagues at a human rights conference in Nuremberg, Germany, earlier this month: “If you clap a little bit more, I may share this prize with Trump,” before breaking into laughter. The previous year’s winner, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, dedicated her prize to the people of Venezuela and Mr. Trump.Norway’s government has pushed back on Mr. Trump’s repeated attacks, noting the committee operates independently of the state. Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide told national broadcaster NRK, “He knows very well that the Nobel Committee is independent. We have reminded them of that, if anyone is wondering, and that is still the case.”During his remarks at Port Huron, Mr. Trump added that he’d be happy to welcome migrants from nearby Denmark, another country he lambasted for its declining his offer to purchase its self-governing territory of Greenland. In September, the president announced a military agreement with Denmark to increase U.S. presence on the sovereign island nation.“Anybody who would like to come to our country from Denmark, I’m all for it,” Mr. Trump said.
