Hasan Piker Inadvertently Outs Neville Singham as ‘Funding Vehicle’ for Pro-Communist ‘Political Movements’

Twitch influencer Hasan Piker, during a recent livestream, appeared to confirm long-running claims that nonprofits associated with his ideological ally, Marxist tech titan Neville Roy Singham, illegally use their tax-exempt status to bankroll political causes.Mr. Piker addressed Mr. Singham’s philanthropic endeavors during a six-hour livestream entitled “FEDS ARE AFTER ME,” in which he responded to the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control’s decision to subpoena him over his recent trip to Cuba alongside other socialist and communist activists.The subpoenas were served to Mr. Piker, the founder of the antiwar group CodePink, and dozens of other Americans over allegations that they violated American business sanctions against the Communist Party of Cuba during their visit. Some 40 minutes into the stream, Mr. Piker argued that the investigation reflects a broader effort to zero in on Mr. Singham and his financial support for American-based communist and antiwar organizations, including the Party for Socialism and Liberation, ANSWER Coalition, and CodePink.“I think that ultimately the target is probably Singham and his operation from PSL to ANSWER Coalition to CodePink — like anything that he has ever financed,” Mr. Piker said, going on to describe Mr. Singham as a “funding vehicle” for “a lot of political movements in the country, a lot of activism.”The comments appear to mark the first time a figure within Mr. Singham’s orbit has described his philanthropic endeavors as explicitly political — blowing the lid on long-running claims that his nonprofits are in fact politically motivated and thus ineligible for tax-exempt charitable status. Under the Internal Revenue Code, charitable and social welfare organizations granted tax exemptions are subject to strict restrictions on political activity.“Hasan didn’t refute the network. He mapped it,” declared an investigative analyst at the Manhattan Institute, Stu Smith. “This was never just about one influencer’s Cuba trip. It is about the Singham-linked ecosystem, the groups it funds, the delegations it supports, and the political operations built around them.” Last June, the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform launched an investigation into Mr. Singham over his financial support for extremist groups, amid speculation that he was acting on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party to sow division in America. The committee alleged that Mr. Singham had “created an elaborate dark money network” to funnel millions of dollars to progressive groups that amplify CCP messaging, and that his activities may violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act. Other congressional committees have separately probed Mr. Singham for noncompliance with tax rules for nonprofits.Mr. Singham’s fortune stems from his technology company, Thoughtworks, which he sold in 2017 for an estimated $785 million. Shortly after, he left America — where he was born — for China, where he has lived as an expatriate for more than a decade.Mr. Piker has emerged as an influential voice on the far left, championing socialist causes and expressing sympathy for communism. Since the war in Gaza, his anti-Zionist positions and criticisms of Israel have become central to his political persona.In March, he joined an international convoy of some 600 delegates organized by CodePink that traveled to Cuba, purportedly to deliver aid and pressure America to lift its economic sanctions on the country. The trip was dogged by controversy as Mr. Piker drew ridicule for staying at a luxury hotel, wearing designer clothes, and defending aspects of Cuba’s communist system. Critics branded him and his fellow travelers “champagne socialists.”
