House Democrats Ask Mandelson To Testify on ‘Critical’ Links to Epstein

The ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, Congressman Robert Garcia, is asking Lord Peter Mandelson to testify as part of an ongoing probe into Jeffrey Epstein.Mr. Garcia and Congressman Suhas Subramanyam wrote to Mr. Mandelson on Friday requesting he answer questions from the committee.The British prime minister, Sir Keir Starmer, fired Mr. Mandelson as ambassador to Washington in September after emails were published that showed he remained friends with Epstein following his 2008 conviction for sex crimes involving a minor.Newly released Epstein files created a new uproar over their links. Mr. Mandelson resigned from the House of Lords in disgrace last week as Scotland Yard announced that it was opening an investigation into him for what it called “misconduct in public office” after the files showed he may have shared market-sensitive information in an email with Epstein following the 2008 global financial crisis, including early notice of a 500 billion bailout of the euro.The letter the congressmen sent to Mr. Mandelson — via email — detailed some of the evidence they wanted to ask questions about, including his handwritten note that was included in Epstein’s 50th Birthday Book that referred to Epstein as his “best pal” and “sizable” monetary transfers Epstein made to him.“While you no longer serve as British Ambassador to the United States and have stepped down from the House of Lords, it is clear that you possessed extensive social and business ties to Jeffrey Epstein and hold critical information pertaining to our investigation of Epstein’s operations,” the letter from the congressman said. “Given the appalling allegations regarding Epstein’s conduct, we request that you make yourself available for a transcribed interview with Committee staff regarding the crimes of Jeffrey Epstein and his co-conspirators.”In the letter, the members also pointed out several instances where Mr. Mandelson was photographed or mentioned in the 3.5 million files that have been released.Mr. Mandelson has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing connected to Epstein but has apologized for his relationship with him.Messrs. Garcia and Subramanyam made a similar request to Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, then a prince, last year.
