ICE Detains Green Card Holders for Illegally Voting in New Jersey, Democratic State Lawmaker Says

Immigration enforcement authorities are cracking down on illegal voting by green card holders, a New Jersey Democratic state assemblyman says, with multiple people detained at airports for noncitizen voting within the last week.As early voting is underway in New Jersey, Assemblyman Avi Schnall said Thursday that members of the Orthodox Jewish community who are not American citizens have voted.“They voted in elections and they only have a green card,” he said. “They are not full American citizens.”Mr. Schnall, who is a rabbi and represents Lakewood, an area of the state which has a burgeoning Orthodox community, delivered an extraordinary direct-to-camera warning to his community in a video he filmed behind the wheel of his car. He said immigration authorities had stopped the noncitizen voters at airports and sent them to detention centers.“Every single eligible voter must vote,” Mr. Schnall said. “But please, if you are not a citizen, and you are here with a green card, do not vote.”It remained unclear how the green card holders were registered to vote, but it’s the latest controversy swirling around New Jersey’s automatic voter registration at Motor Vehicle Commission sites. The Sun reported last week that Ilaria Giugliano, a 19-year-old green card holder, is registered to vote and has been an active voter on the rolls for more than a year.On Thursday, her stepfather Joe Barone spoke with a state official who said his daughter needs to give her permission to be deleted from the voter rolls and arrive in person to sign off on the deletion.“She needs to be deleted and they are going to delete her,” Mr. Barone said.“It’s an eye opener,” he added.Confusion remains over how Ms. Giugliano was added to the voter rolls. Representatives for the governor have claimed to have screenshots of Ms. Giugliano’s driver’s license application, purportedly showing she incorrectly checked off a box that said she was a citizen and wanted to register to vote.Mr. Barone said that’s not true, and Ms. Giugliano said she filled out her application with extra care so that she did not make a similar mistake. The governor’s office did not respond to a request for comment. On Tuesday, a trio of Republican lawmakers representing the area of the state where Ms. Giugliano lives formally requested an investigation, calling on the state’s acting Secretary of State to investigate the “apparent improper registration of a noncitizen.”Separately, Republican Assemblyman Erik Simonsen called for the state to institute mandatory voter ID and to review and clean up the voter rolls.“How can we expect New Jerseyans to trust our elections if we are not doing everything possible to protect them?” Mr. Simonsen asked.Mr. Simonsen called the reports of non-citizens voting “deeply troubling” and said the reports come after Gov. Mikie Sherrill’s administration said the problem had been corrected. Ms. Sherrill revealed in July that over 6,000 non-citizens had been registered to vote through the Motor Vehicle Commission, and nearly 400 had voted in previous elections.“Election integrity is not a partisan issue,” Mr. Simonsen said. “Every lawful vote deserves to be counted, and every citizen deserves confidence in the system.”
