Israel Braces for Further Sanctions

London’s fog seems to constantly prevent Labourites from telling a friend from foe. “We gave the Brits the intel that there was going to be an attack, and it’s an Iranian-sponsored attack. And pretty much the next day they slapped sanctions on us,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tells Fox News, adding, “the collapse before the Islamist-Marxist alliance is very dangerous for the future of the West.”He’s got a point. Intelligence, by nature, is discussed in hushed tones. Assessments can be confident and specific, or less so. Ask Mr. Netanyahu. He is accused by his Israeli detractors of ignoring foreign spies who allegedly told him three years ago that a major Hamas operation was about to be launched. Bibi denies getting such warnings. Yet even if he did, how pointed was the intelligence? Ditto the intelligence Mr. Netanyahu says the Mossad gave MI6. Regardless, it’s an ill-kept secret that Israel’s security agencies quietly share helpful information of all kinds with their British and European counterparts. That cooperation saves lives. The specificity of the intel Israel shared aside, London’s anti-terror squad today arrested an Iranian-British national in connection with an incident at a Royal Air Force base at Fairford. “There are strong indications that Iran played a part,” Prime Minister Andy Burnham said. It’s unlikely that any intelligence agency in the world has deeper infiltration into the Islamic Republic than Mossad. If a security bigwig is looking for tips on pending Iranian-linked terror attacks, calling up an Israeli contact is well advised. At the same time, though, British politicians are caught up in a frenzied anti-Israel fever. Incitement against the Jewish state is rife, and the Labour government is stoking the flames. The Israeli government is a “stain on the conscience of the world,” the foreign secretary, Ed Miliband, brayed this week to a Labour conference at Liverpool. “I want to say to the millions of people in this country, and indeed elsewhere, who have been moved and outraged by the plight of the Palestinian people: We hear you. You were right.” He vowed to end financial, construction, and services to Israelis who are trying to “destroy the two-state solution.”How much of that Palestinian “plight” was caused by the Arab leadership’s rejection of Israeli offers of statehood? History aside, Mr. Miliband, as Bibi noted, appeals to a burgeoning European Islamic-Marxist crowd. Rather than potential terrorists, Dutch airport authorities are now turning their attention to the menace of products from Judea and Samaria. Israeli tourists need to prove their suitcases contain no illicit dates grown at Jericho. The European Union is Israel’s largest trade partner. Every Israeli bank has clients in Judea and Samaria, and a British banking ban could cripple the Israeli economy. Meanwhile Israel’s defense and cyber skills help save Europe from domestic and foreign terrorism. Europe can pressure Israel on trade, while Israel can pressure Europe on security, an Israeli blogger, Eran Efrat, notes. Yet a self-destructive financial war against the Jewish state is intensifying. Israelis are bracing for further British and European sanctions after the Jewish state’s October 27 election. That assault is unlikely to ease even if Mr. Netanyahu’s political rivals take over. Economic malaise, waves of immigration, and a leftward drift in some countries cry out for a scapegoat. Jerusalem is an all-too-convenient target. The Labourites assault valuable Israeli security allies — and romance potential enemies.
