Italy’s Giorgia Meloni Fends Off Challenge From Her Right, Bolstering Center-Conservative Coalition

Italy’s center-right holds, reinforcing Giorgia Meloni’s governing coalition, despite a challenge from Roberto Vannacci’s harder-edged Futuro Nazionale movement. Although Mr. Vannacci’s bloc has been rising in the polls, the party’s candidate, Domenico Giannetta, was soundly defeated in the recent by-election for the Italian Chamber of Deputies in the Reggio Calabria–Locri constituency, capturing just 10.94 percent of the vote. Prior to the election, Mr. Vannacci had predicted that Reggio Calabria would be his party’s “Saxony,” alluding to the German AfD’s victory in that region. However, the former general’s movement failed its first electoral test.Signora Meloni is not a female Friedrich Merz. Despite her youth, she is a battle-tested politico.As the Financial Times’s Gideon Rachman has noted, “she has largely governed from the centre right — avoiding a confrontation with her EU partners that might have cost EU funds and spooked the debt markets.”Moreover, as Mr. Rachman wrote, her policies are a model for Europe and “arguably an expression of democracy rather than its negation.”Democracy in action won the day in Reggio Calabria.The winner, Fabio Roscioli, the national treasurer for Forza Italia, part of Signora Meloni’s governing bloc, captured the seat handily, garnering 51.02 percent of the vote. The leftist Campo Largo’s candidate, Frank Benedetto, came in second with 36.59 percent of the vote.Though Signora Meloni is mindful that both Futuro Nazionale and the left-wing Campo Largo have not been entirely neutralized, she exulted on social media: “The center-right confirms itself as united also in the Reggio Calabria by-election, prevailing over the very broad field of the opposition.” She said the vote “once again rewards a coalition that is cohesive, rooted, and capable of speaking to local communities.”This victory also highlights the premier’s great, good fortune in having “Giuseppi” Conte, Elly Schlein and Co. to solidify her base. Mr. Conte and Ms. Schlein, in addition to their internal contradictions over Ukraine, Russia, and Italy’s proposed antisemitism law, have turned a blind eye to budding Islamic extremism in Italy.Signora Meloni is highlighting these quarrels on the left via the pending vote in October in the Chamber of Deputies over her Stabilicum electoral reform proposal. The measure would guarantee the winning bloc a working majority in both houses of Parliament if the party secures at least 42 percent of the national vote.Yet in the interim, fears of Islamic extremism are escalating. In May at Modena, an Italian of Moroccan descent, Salim El Koudri stands accused of deliberately ramming his car into a crowd of pedestrians, killing one person immediately.Another victim, an elderly woman who was critically injured, died two months later. In all, seven people were hit by the vehicle. A fleeing Mr. El Koudri, authorities said, stabbed and slashed a bystander who tried to stop him.Though Mr. Conte and Ms. Schlein condemned the episode, they tended to agree with an initial investigation attributing the violence to psychiatric distress rather than acknowledging concerns about rising Islamist radicalization.Indeed, when it comes to sovereignty and national security, the Campo Largo is either feckless or naïve. The disloyal opposition has demonstrated a pandering genuflection to extremism that violates the rights and freedoms of women in the Italian republic Women are not chattel. Yet, Il Giornale recently reported that a prominent Islamic preacher and promoter of “Islamic Reawakening” in Italy, Ahmed Daawah, declared how “The hijab is a divine command of great importance, revealed in the Qur’an from above seven heavens and taught by all the Messengers of Allah throughout history.”In seeking to dismantle the alleged patriarchy of Italy’s governing coalition, the left-wing parties of the Campo Largo have turned a blind eye to such fundamentalism.Italian journalism’s gray eminence, Il Tempo’s Vittorio Feltri, averred that “by dint of fighting the presumed and fake patriarchy of the center-right, the stars of third worldism have ended up falling in love with Islamic patriarchy: the fundamentalism of progressive libertarians… can you imagine?”Even TV journalist Lilli Gruber — no friend of Signora Meloni — took to the air to voice her view: “In democratic societies like ours, a covered face should not be accepted. If I want to integrate, I must show my eyes, my face.”Signora Meloni lives in the 21st, not the Seventh, century. The victory in Reggio Calabria is a reaffirmation that her brand of conservative governance and devotion to democratic values must and will endure.
