Judge Orders Disclosure of Documents Regarding FBI Raid on Fulton County Election Facility

A federal judge in Georgia has ordered that documents related to a recent Federal Bureau of Investigation raid on an election facility in Fulton County be unsealed by Tuesday. The raid, which took place late last month, resulted in federal agents seizing a significant number of ballots and records from the 2020 election.Judge J.P. Boulee of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia issued the order, noting that neither the county officials suing for the return of the materials nor the federal government opposed making the records public.“Although Petitioners originally filed this case under seal, both parties have now indicated to the Court that they do not oppose unsealing the docket or the motions filed by Petitioners,” wrote Judge Boulee, who was nominated to the bench by President Trump in 2019.The judge granted the government until Tuesday to file the warrant affidavit, though certain information will remain private to protect witnesses.“Respondent has stated that it does not oppose the unsealing of the search warrant affidavit and any other papers associated with the warrant subject to the redaction of the names of nongovernmental witnesses,” Judge Boulee added in the order.The FBI executed the search warrant on January 28 at Fulton County’s main election facility in Union City, near Atlanta. The operation focused on records connected to the 2020 general election, with agents seizing items including original ballots, tabulator tapes, electronic ballot images, and voter rolls.In response, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners Chair Robb Pitts and the Board of Registration and Elections filed a lawsuit against the federal government. The officials are seeking the return of 656 boxes of election materials taken into federal custody.The raid has drawn intense scrutiny given Fulton County’s central role in the aftermath of the 2020 election. Although a hand recount affirmed President Biden’s victory in Georgia, Mr. Trump and his allies have continued to claim, without evidence, that fraud occurred in the heavily Democratic county.The presence of Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard at the Georgia raid has fueled further speculation about the intent behind the operation. Top Democrats, including Virginia Senator Mark Warner, have raised alarms about the involvement of high-level intelligence officials in domestic election matters.“When you put all of this together, it is clear that what happened in Fulton County is not about revisiting the past, it is about shaping the outcome of future elections,” Mr. Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said last week.Ms. Gabbard defended her presence in a letter to Mr. Warner, stating her appearance was “requested” by Mr. Trump and that she only observed the operation “for a brief period of time.” However, speaking at the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday, Mr. Trump contradicted this account, claiming it was Attorney General Pam Bondi who insisted Ms. Gabbard oversee the raid.The controversy comes as Mr. Trump has recently called for a federal takeover of elections, challenging the standard practice where state and local governments run elections without federal interference.
