Justice Department Subpoenas Minnesota State Officials, Accusing Them of Impeding ICE Enforcement

The Justice Department is issuing grand jury subpoenas to the offices of five Minnesota government officials, including the state’s attorney general, Keith Ellison, and the mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey, for what it alleges is a conspiracy to interfere with ICE’s ongoing federal crackdown in the city.The Justice Department’s federal inquiry is also seeking documents detailing immigration enforcement policies of the state from the same government offices as well as those of Minnesota’s governor, Tim Walz and the mayor of St. Paul, Kaohly Her, according to reports. The office of the Hennepin County attorney, Mary Moriarty, whose office launched an evidence portal to preserve evidence related to the fatal ICE-involved shooting of Renee Good, also received a subpoena.The focus of the Justice Department’s inquiry is reportedly on whether Minnesota government officials conspired to impede the thousands of federal agents who have been in the state since last month looking for undocumented immigrants, according to The New York Times.Mr. Walz on Tuesday called the Justice Department’s actions “an authoritarian tactic.”“This Justice Department investigation, sparked by calls for accountability in the face of violence, chaos, and the killing of Renee Good, does not seek justice. It is a partisan distraction,” Mr. Walz said in a statement posted on his X account. An FBI spokesman declined to comment.Mr. Frey said on social media Tuesday that he would “not be intimidated.”“This is an obvious attempt to intimidate me for standing up for Minneapolis, local law enforcement, and residents against the chaos and danger this Administration has brought to our city,” Mr. Frey said in a social media post. The Deputy Attorney General, Todd Blanche, told Fox News last week that he believed Messrs. Frey and Walz’s “rhetoric” was “very close” to a federal crime.“When the governor or the mayor threaten our officers, when the mayor suggests that he’s encouraging citizens to call 911 when they see ICE officers, that is very close to a federal crime,” Mr. Blanche told Fox News.This is a developing story.
