Kanye West’s Comeback Suffers a Blow as Britain Bars Him From Headlining London Festival

Kanye West’s bid to stage a comeback at a United Kingdom music festival this summer has been thwarted as the British government banned the rapper from entering the country, forcing the event’s cancellation. The organizers of the annual London-based Wireless Festival called off the event Tuesday following reports that Mr. West, who was set to headline the three-day festival, had been denied a travel application. British officials said earlier in the day that the controversial rapper was barred because “his presence in the U.K. would not be conducive to the public good.”The festival cited Mr. West’s travel ban as the reason for the cancellation, though it stood by his initial booking. “As with every Wireless Festival, multiple stakeholders were consulted in advance of booking Ye and no concerns were highlighted at the time,” organizers said in a statement. “Antisemitism in all its forms is abhorrent, and we recognise the real and personal impact these issues have had.”The cancellation comes as Mr. West has sought to rehabilitate his career after being ostracized from the music industry for making unabashedly antisemitic remarks and threatening the Jewish community. His antisemitic statements date to a 2022 interview with Alex Jones, in which he said he admired Hitler, denied the Holocaust, and identified as a Nazi.In the years that followed, he amplified antisemitic conspiracy theories about Jews on social media and in interviews, earning a profile on the Anti-Defamation League’s website. In 2025, he released a song titled “Heil Hitler” that samples audio from a 1935 speech Adolf Hitler delivered at the Krupp Factory in Germany.This past January, Mr. West took out a full-page advertisement in the Wall Street Journal apologizing for his antisemitic conduct, declaring “I am not a Nazi or an antisemite. I love Jewish people.” He attributed his behavior to an undiagnosed brain injury sustained in a 2002 car accident and to his bipolar disorder, but said he was “committed to accountability, treatment, and meaningful change.”His apology has been met with skepticism in the Jewish community. News of Mr. West’s appearance at Wireless sparked backlash and prompted major sponsors Pepsi and Diageo to withdraw from the event.Mr. West addressed those concerns earlier this week, saying he “would be grateful for the opportunity to meet with members of the Jewish community in the U.K. in person, to listen.” He added: “I know words aren’t enough — I’ll have to show change through my actions. If you’re open, I’m here.”Britain’s prime minister, Keir Starmer, said Tuesday that Mr. West “should never have been invited to headline Wireless.”“This Government stands firmly with the Jewish community, and we will not stop in our fight to confront and defeat the poison of antisemitism,” he posted on X.The Community Security Trust, a British charity dedicated to combating antisemitism, expressed support for the government’s decision. “People who show genuine and meaningful remorse for previous antisemitic behavior will always receive a sympathetic hearing from the Jewish community, but that process must come before this kind of public rehabilitation,” the group said.
