Kennedy Center Warns of Imminent ‘Fiscal Collapse’ Unless Trump’s Name Returns to Building

The Kennedy Center is bracing for what officials describe as imminent bankruptcy unless President Trump’s name is permanently etched onto the building’s facade, according to new reports.The revelations surfaced in a draft resolution circulated to trustees ahead of Tuesday’s special session, where the Trump-installed board is expected to weigh two separate but related crises: the center’s shaky finances and the physical safety of its aging main building. According to internal documents obtained by The New York Times and The Washington Post, the documents, leadership has cautioned that payroll and routine maintenance payments could become unmanageable “within a matter of weeks,” pushing the institution toward collapse.At the center of the controversy is a proposed trade-off: public recognition of Mr. Trump on the building in exchange for his fundraising muscle. The draft resolution reportedly states that Mr. Trump has offered to “raise the necessary funds to keep the Center from bankruptcy,” but warns that his involvement is contingent on receiving “appropriate recognition” of his role. Without it, the document suggests, “it is unlikely that President Trump will provide the fundamental oversight of the renovation of the main building and lead the fiscal rescue of the center.”Board member and longtime Trump ally Paolo Zampolli defended the strategy in comments to the Times, framing Mr. Trump’s star power as a financial necessity. “Trump attracts money,” he said. “So when Trump says donate to this place, everyone will donate.”Trustees are reportedly being presented with 10 possible inscriptions to place beneath the center’s main signage, one of which reads, “Renovation Restoration and Endowment overseen by President Donald J. Trump and the Trump Kennedy Center Fund.” The proposal arrives just weeks after the board approved similar language, “Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump,” a move currently being challenged in court before U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper, who previously ruled that only Congress holds authority to rename the institution.The push has drawn sharp criticism from Representative Joyce Beatty of Ohio, a Kennedy Center trustee who has sued to block Mr. Trump’s name from appearing on the building. Her attorneys, Norm Eisen and Nathaniel Zelinsky, condemned the latest proposal in a statement: “This constant effort to add Donald Trump’s name to the Kennedy Center facade is the definition of insanity. This is now the third attempt to deface this sacred memorial and turn it into a vanity project for one man’s ego. Worse still, now Trump is taking the Center hostage and threatening to in effect kill it unless he gets his way. This has to stop.”Compounding the financial turmoil, documents reveal a separate resolution urging trustees to immediately shutter the main building following a September 4th incident in which a section of ceiling plaster collapsed roughly 60 feet in the Grand Foyer during a storm. While no injuries were reported, management has since declared the building “unsafe for continued occupancy,” citing widespread structural corrosion discovered in follow-up inspections.
