Mamdani Courts Voters With No-ID Pitch as GOP Sounds Alarm

Mayor Zohran Mamdani has been accused of encouraging illegal immigrants to vote in a video in which he assures New Yorkers they don’t need ID to cast a ballot. The mayor also promised that ICE would not be at polling places in New York in the video to promote early voting filmed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. “In New York City, you don’t need to bring anything with you to cast your vote at the polls,” the mayor says in the film. “Armed federal agents, including ICE, cannot be at New York polling places without a judicial warrant.” The video dropped on the third day of early voting across New York state, as Republicans across the country have raised alarm bells over voter rolls ahead of the congressional midterms. That includes just across the river in New Jersey, where non-citizens continue to be registered to vote illegally, as the Sun exclusively reported. “No voter ID required. No need to prove who you are at the polls. But don’t worry, there’s absolutely no fraud!” Congresswoman Claudia Tinney, a New York Republican and chair of the Election Integrity Caucus said on X. “Just trust Mamdani on this one!”“You need an ID to board a plane or even buy a sharpie… you would think protecting the ballot box deserves at least that much,” Congressman Randy Weber, a Texas Republican, said in another post. The co-founder of conservative policy non-profit The Federalist Society, David M. McIntosh, put it more bluntly. “The only reason for Mamdani to remind New Yorkers they don’t need an ID to vote is if he wanted people who aren’t allowed to vote to do so.” While New York City voted to allow non-citizens to vote in municipal elections — such as for City Council members and mayor — in January 2022, the state’s highest court struck the law down in March last year. But non-U.S. citizens have never been allowed to vote in statewide elections, such as the congressional and governor elections currently underway. The video landed three days after the mayor released another clip in which he advises viewers, in Spanish, on how to evade and oppose ICE. The mayor has spoken more and more aggressively against the federal law enforcement agency since agents shot a 28-year-old undocumented man at the Bronx earlier this month, prompting protests and assertions by members of Mr. Mamdani’s own Democratic Socialist party that his administration was complicit in violence against immigrants.
