The prime minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, is calling a deepfake image of her posing in bed wearing nothing but lingerie an attack.Ms. Meloni shared a copy of the image on her Facebook page on Tuesday and warned people not to spread it. The image had been posted by a man who said Ms. Meloni should be “ashamed” of herself.Ms. Meloni said the image was created to attack and invent falsehoods. She said social media users should verify that images are real before believing and sharing them.“Deepfakes are a dangerous tool, because they can deceive, manipulate and hit anyone. I can defend myself. Several commenters offered support for the prime minister. “It’s not just a political attack, this is violence!” one man posted. Others suggested she report the images to police and a few also said she should sue.This isn’t the first time that Ms. Meloni has been the victim of a deepfake. A pornographic website last year published fake images of Ms. Meloni and other prominent Italian women. The images created outrage and Ms. Meloni said she was “disgusted” by what happened.Italian lawmakers took up the issue and the country became the first member of the European Union to enact a comprehensive law regulating the use of artificial intelligence. It bans the dissemination of AI-generated or altered images, video, or voice that mislead and cause unjust harm. Violations can result in up to 5 years in prison.
